Fuck this guy (John Wayne)

https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/12/us/john-wayne-exhibit-usc-trnd/index.html

While the statement did not directly address the controversy surrounding Wayne, his legacy has recently been re-examined, especially after a 1971 interview with Playboy resurfaced and went viral last year. In it, Wayne espoused derogatory views of African Americans, Native Americans and films with gay characters.

"I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility," the actor said. "I don't believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people."

Wayne's comments were a flashpoint for USC students, some of whom began calling for the exhibit's removal last October, according to USC student news outlet Annenberg Media.

Sacheen Littlefeather: Raging John Wayne tried to attack me at 1973 Oscars

https://nypost.com/2022/08/19/sacheen-littlefeather-raging-john-wayne-tried-to-attack-me-at-1973-oscars/

Sacheen Littlefeather is recalling a very pivotal moment from almost 50 years ago.

The Native American activist, 75, appeared on behalf of Marlon Brando at the 45th Academy Awards, where she gave an impassioned speech about the treatment of her people in the entertainment industry.

While the surprise appearance festered boos from the audience, one actor in particular apparently was so filled with “rage” that he had to be restrained.

Western icon John Wayne, who died in 1979, was reportedly furious enough that he attempted to ambush Littlefeather once she left the stage — and she won’t ever forget it.

==========================================================

Apparently he liked latin women, because he married three of them.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Wayne

Wayne was married three times and divorced twice. His three wives included one of Spanish American descent, Josephine Alicia Saenz, and two from Latin America, Esperanza Baur and Pilar Pallete. He had four children with Josephine: Michael Wayne (November 23, 1934 – April 2, 2003), Mary Antonia "Toni" Wayne LaCava (February 25, 1936 – December 6, 2000), Patrick Wayne (born July 15, 1939), and Melinda Wayne Munoz (born December 3, 1940). He had three more children with Pilar: Aissa Wayne (born March 31, 1956), John Ethan Wayne (born February 22, 1962), and Marisa Wayne (born February 22, 1966)

Wayne's words show him to be a racist bigot. His views on blacks are just nauseating in their racism and his views on indigenous peoples being "selfish" for not giving up their lands are just mind blowing given Wayne's on screen persona for years. The fact that John Wayne continues to be celebrated as some kind of American Hero is utterly disgusting.

He actually asked for, and received, a demotion from sergeant to private, because he thought his worsening physical limitations would prohibit him from leading a squad properly. Despite all of that, and despite already being wounded, he went after a Japanese machine gun position, allowing the surviving members of his patrol to withdraw.

with Wayne still watchable despite... I, however, cannot get over what a poor horseback rider Wayne was --especially in his middle and later years. Maybe okay in his early years, but his unfortunate horses must have scarcely had a mouth left the way Wayne would pull their heads around and sit on them as though he were mounting a damned "lazy boy recliner." It became so hard for me to watch, given how many good riders were generally in the same movies.

Sat Aug 20, 2022, 11:08 AM
Aug 2022

This is a previously unpublished work inspired by driving past a state park called "John Wayne Marina State Park":

Manifest Destiny Rides Again

When the Duke says, "Saddle up!" the testosterone
pulls at his pantleg and his big Colt catches the light
of god's eye which rolls over the horizon like a tumbleweed,

and the schoolmarm's heart flutters as she watches
his rugged boots kick up the dust over the only
“good” Injuns and those seven bad hombres he left
stretched out on some lonesome prairie.

He never even says goodbye to the gold-tooth whore
who drowns her sorrow straight out of the bottle
most nights at Loopy Lou’s where she spots him.
When he loses his poke, she pours him another shot,
and she bandages him up when he’s full of lead.
Just don’t expect her to cry when he craps out.
The day he mounts his horse, and digs in his silver spurs,
there won’t be a dry eye in town except hers
and she’ll curse him as his silhouette vanishes,
a slow lope into the sunset. Damn his hide.

Over the next rise, Injuns throw up their arms,
fall off their war ponies just
to see him smile. Some say he wears false teeth,
that he’s really the bad guy all along.

(Start Second Reel Here):

On D-Day, the Duke dopes off,
dodges the draft for a movie set,
raises no flag over Mt. Suribachi,
sees no action with the Flying Leathernecks,
doesn’t once perform for the troops in Berlin
after the Longest Day. Explain that.

Didn’t a real Vietnam vet claim
it was John Wayne’s fault our boys lost Southeast Asia?
Don’t let nobody tell you any different. Every single one
of them red blooded American boys cuts their teeth on
Joan Crawford’s shoulder pads,
gallops bareback on Audie Murphy’s horse, and
fights for John Wayne, Apple pie and the Flag.

The Duke growls “Pull yourself up by your balls, boys.”
Tenderfoots circle the wagons around the campfire,
and share their grub with the Donner Party,
maybe dodge a few arrows at the Little Bighorn.
It’s all a bluff. The undertaker cuts the deck for those
who hope to cheat death in a card game on Boot Hill.

Don’t blame the movie star who prides himself
on doing his own stunts, even his biggest fight--
his battle with a bottle -- all uphill, like he’s in a race
with Teddy and the roughriders.
He claims he is busy signing autographs
at the Santa Monica Pier
when the Orientals torpedo Pearl Harbor.

The only time he ever sees the Alamo, it’s in a picture book.

John Wayne, he aint no more an American hero
than Shirley Temple’s curls or Granny Smith’s corncob pipe.
Smoke them road apples if you like.
Isn’t ever gonna taste as American as Mother’s blue-ribbon pie.

That sidewinder hooking his thumbs in his belt loops
wasn’t even named John in the first place.
His Mammy named him Marion same as some old spinster
who plays the pipe organ at church, not a real cowboy,
just a dude ranch sodbuster on a camera-ready cattle drive
who’s never been anywhere more dangerous than
Frontier Land in Burbank--that kind of cowboy.
Ought to make him shrink a little in his boots.

He’s a Dime Novel hero, the kind you find
in every dusty one-horse town,
striking a match off the head of a wooden
cigar store Indian, although he probably couldn’t roll
a smoke to save his hide. Even so, he fancies himself
town sheriff, dreams of gathering a posse
to head the Cavalry off at the pass, to warn them
of trouble up ahead. Hell’s Bells.

John Wayne wasn’t no kind of lawman even if
he does have a tarnished star on Hollywood Boulevard.

Manifest Destiny? Don’t make me laugh.
I hear they named a state park after him out West,
at the end of the trail.

Put that in your hat, Pilgrim.

We wonder how people fall into Hatfields vs. McCoys or Sunni vs. Shia stupidity and resentment cycles over decades or even centuries. One of the best ways is to cherry pick actions of the long dead and make a big stink about them.

Wayne was an entertainer and a very good one. He said (and obviously thought) some pretty ignorant, pretty assholish stuff. So what? We all need to get a thicker skin and be adults. There are quotes from the Bible I would offer to show how old an idea that is, but I'm sure we all know them.

On edit: And please don't assume I'm thumping the Bible. Really. The same ideas are all over the place in ancient texts and literature. Also modern.

my step-mom was a Red Cross worker in India. I don't remember what brought it up, but I remember when I was a grade school kid her talking about how "that movie star John Payne" showed up at the US military installation where she was, and strutted around like a big shot while civilian photographers took pictures of him trying to shake hands with everyone, but that few did. My dad, who was in India then too, said, "Yes, but it was John Wayne."

I have that interview -- in a book of Playboy interviews -- and used to quote from it in 2004 on this forum, in a few conversations about Wayne. Some people didn't know what an asshole he was in real life.

He named "possible" Communists to the Senate Committee on Un-American Activities. (McCarthy) Many Hollywood talents ended up on blackball lists. One of those was Dalton Trumbo.

HE WAS TERRIBLE ACTOR.

Underline in bold 10 times. A total one note. He was the same guy in every role.

And a big reason for that was Bridges. The talent difference between the two we actors is a chasm.

growing up I liked his movies. I was an uninformed young man. Then after serving in the Army(Vietnam) and coming home to political chaos I entered university and started learning. Yeah, to hell with this guy. A definite racist. Wouldn't be surprised to find out sexist also. Oh well, America has bred some loo loos...just glad many have been outed.

No one said that. It’s just that it isn’t surprising that a guy who was born in 1907 is saying shit like that in an interview that happened fifty years ago. Like you’re shocked by this? He’s been dead for decades, what’s the point of attacking him now? It just seems silly and meaningless.

If bringing back slavery was put to a majority vote at any time in his life, it would have won. Fuck, it would win now in a lot of the country.

That was just the way it was. It doesn’t make it right, it’s simply reality.

To them, he represented "real man" and a "real American".

He's still referenced in RW propaganda.

Just like the TV character of Archie Bunker is. Because those people are too goddamn stupid to realize that All in the Family was a parody concerning the ridiculousness of racism, etc.

Fuck John Wayne. He was a fucking asshole who is still being adored.
