Fox News,CNN, NYT, WaPo and whatstheirname had for years been running the theme that Obama is toxic and unpopular and if you associate yourself with him, you will lose your election.
The result was democratic candidates running campaign's like "I'm a Democrat but I don't support the democratic President."
And this mixed messaging turned off democratic voters.

The man in charge of the House GOP's campaign strategy has been doling out advice to Republican candidates and incumbents in key battleground races as they prepare for the general election: Don't be distracted by Donald Trump on the campaign trail, and instead focus on the issues Republicans believe will be most salient to voters in the midterms.
The guidance from Rep. Tom Emmer of Minnesota, relayed by three GOP sources familiar with the internal conversations, reflects a tacit acknowledgment among Republican leaders that the former president could knock the GOP's midterm messaging off course as they seek to recapture the House majority this fall. It also represents a shift from the strategy deployed in many Republican primaries, where embracing Trump -- or at least not alienating him and his base -- was seen as essential to survival.

The key to winning a republican primary is being a Trumper, because Trumpers are the biggest sub-group within the republican voterbase.
The key to winning an election is NOT being a Trumper, because Trumpers are a minority within the general voterbase.
So, what's a republican candidate to do:
a) Keep on being a Trumper and turn off 60% of the general voterbase.
b) Stop being a Trumper and watch your Trumper-voters stay at home on election-day.
There is a third option:
Campaign on how you are a Republican but you don't actually support Trump and anyways let's move on and talk about anything else please.
