When it comes to the Mar-a-Lago matter, there will be no appeasing Donald Trump and his most fervent supporters. There will be no point at which they acknowledge that any law enforcement activity related to the court-approved search of the former presidents home is legitimate. The sooner we accept this as a fundamental fact about the situation, the better.
This is brought to mind by the news that a federal judge has ordered the Justice Department to produce a redacted version of the affidavit undergirding the search warrant for Trumps Florida resort. Federal Magistrate Judge Bruce E. Reinhart says hes inclined toward release.
A prediction: If this document is released, Trump and many of his supporters will seize on the redactions as evidence that the "real rationale" for the search is being covered up and that the entire process is irredeemably illegitimate.
This points to a concrete real-world conundrum. Release of the affidavit probably cant solve a key problem it appears intended to solve: It likely cant reassure Trump supporters that the process is legitimate, because Trump and his most influential propagandists will never allow that its legitimate, no matter what.

(82,849 posts)But they're utterly restrained from saying that the former guy is lying or just revving up his base because "even-handed" and "both sides." They can only repeat what the former guy is saying, without analysis, nuance, or criticism. It's a damn shame, because the former guy lies a whole bunch, convinces a lot of gullible folks, and has a media outlet totally devoted to him.

(6,537 posts)We will have to see a one-by-one listing of each document that he held. I want him indicted so bad. He is a threat to our democracy.
We used to judge potential dates on what they look like, how nice they appear, how they make us feel, etc. etc. Now it is: Are you a Republican? Where do you stand on gun control? Do you think Trump is guilty of the attempted coup? Do you think Mar-a-Lago is a sacred place?
Trump has changed us forever, and we'll probably not be able to reverse the damage. The Republican Inquisition has stolen so much from us.

(1,603 posts)At this stage, his supporters know full well that their guy is a criminal, a nihilist, and a sexual predator. They don't care. He's done everything he set out to do: he's given his evangelical supporters the overturning of Roe vs Wade. He's given tax breaks to corporations, has demonized the liberals, has rolled back decades of civil rights legislation, has gutted environmental restrictions, has defanged the IRS, has destroyed public education, and on and on. From the conservative perspective, his administration was one of the most successful in history.
This is the thing most liberals don't understand: conservatives don't want good government. They see the rule of law as either standing in the way of what they want to do (make money) or of giving privileges to those who they feel don't deserve them. Their vision of the future is anarchic, in which they are safe and secure in their enclaves while the rabble scramble around like the vermin that they are.
Conservatives aren't systemic thinkers. They are closest in mindset to 18th Century European Aristocrats who believed in their own nobility, and saw everyone who threatened that position as the enemy. They view Democracy as a mistake, or believe that their own opportunities would be better under strong hierarchical leadership. History proves them wrong, time and again, but that doesn't change their thinking.
This is why trying to get the MAGAts to see the light will continue to prove disappointing. They see TFG for what he is, and they are perfectly happy with what they see.

(17,549 posts)If he is indicted then he doesn't have much left to lose, and it will be time to sit back, kid your shoes off spool up some Wagner.
When Trump falls, he will try to take the nation with him and go out in a blaze of infamy.
