(1,690 posts)He's trying to get the ratings up. Maybe a junior grade version of FOX in the middle of a complete runaway GOP to their embracing of the extreme right by congress. Just what the country needs, somebody throwing in with the lunatics from what used to be a moderate to somewhat conservative party, back in the day. Just fucking great.

(36,478 posts)Scoop: CNN boss Capitol Hill diplomacy tour
https://www.axios.com/2022/07/21/cnn-boss-licht-capitol-hill-congress
snip...
CNN CEO Chris Licht met with a handful of senior congressional leaders from both sides of the aisle on Capitol Hill on Tuesday in an effort to strengthen the network's relationships with key lawmakers, many of whom have turned sour on cable news, sources familiar with the meetings told Axios.
The big picture: Licht has been vocal about his push to lead CNN away from what critics have described as partisan and alarmist programming in favor of neutral journalism and balanced debate.
Details: The network boss met with a little less than a dozen lawmakers, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Republican Whip John Thune (R-S.D.), Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

If you prefer partisan and alarmist programming from a lefty perspective, MSNBC sure has been filling that role over the past few years.

(7,522 posts)Like the fact that CNN fired Brian Stelter
And the fact that just in the past 24 hours they have had on RW guests that were't on before who are repeating the big lie that the CNN newspeople pointed out repeatedly in the past.
Despite your glib attitude on the subject, the fact is that there are solid reasons for being alarmist in these times. We had a president who was a danger to our democracy in office, and continues to be out of office in fomenting violence and trying to overturn elections and democracy. Oh yeah we also had a mob try to take over the Capitol and we have had numerous politically driven terrorist attacks. Perhaps you are unaware of these facts. But most of us are and see good reason to be alarmed due to these "pesky" facts.
You have written that you believe Licht is in charge and running things because "he" wanted these changes. Oh, and he met with some Democrats too so that proves ... something. But he himself acknowledged that his orders are coming from the parent company and reports say he is against what is going now at CNN. Oh that is pesky.
The fact is CNN has overall done a very good job of rejecting the lies with fact-based reporting and analysis from solid former and current officials. Try watching Stelter's last show wherein he gives a ground floor look into how his show pursues the truth as much as they can. Perhaps you just don't know that much about how the media is supposed to perform in a democracy. It would be good learning experience because it was a lesson in how the media should do its job.
Or you don't care and can overlook your pesky facts and go on pooh-poohing this development. A lot had that attitude when the Fairness Doctrine was overturned and Faux News and RW became a big player in the media. With the recent surge in fascism and domestic terrorism (agreed to by anyone paying attention including the FBI director), that perspective didn't turn out so well.

I provided you with many. Despite your claim about pesky facts, you have none. Just opinion you claim are facts. Using lame phrases like "bent out of shape" is just more dismissive BS. Most of us care about what happens to our democracy and the vital role the media plays in it.

(7,522 posts)If you read about the founding of this democracy you will find out the media - printed materials at that time - were included as a vital role in promoting democratic ideals. So yes I defend journalists who have done their job in this democracy as several have at CNN. Imagine that.

Part of our Nation's precious heritage is its natural resources. It is the common responsibility of Federal, state, and local governments to improve and develop them, always working in the closest harmony and partnership.
To protect the vital interest of every citizen in a safe and adequate highway system, the Federal Government is continuing its central role in the Federal Aid Highway Program.
I shall first discuss are of particular concern to the members of our great labor force, who with their heads, hearts and hands produce so much of the wealth of our country.
Protection against the hazards of temporary unemployment should be extended to some 6 1/2 millions of workers, including civilian Federal workers, who now lack this safeguard. Moreover, the Secretary of Labor is making available to the states studies and recommendations in the fields of weekly benefits, periods of protection and extension of coverage.
Our basic social security program, the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance system, to which individuals contribute during their productive years and receive benefits based on previous earnings, is designed to shield them from destitution. Last year I recommended extension of the social insurance system to include more than 10,000,000 additional persons.
Through special vocational training, this program presently returns each year some 60,000 handicapped individuals to productive work. Far more disabled people can be saved each year from idleness and dependence if this program is gradually increased.
The preparation of teachers as, indeed, the control and direction of public education policy, is a state and local responsibility. However, the Federal Government should stand ready to assist states which demonstrably cannot provide sufficient school buildings.

(70,710 posts)I would be rubbed wrong all the time that Brit HUME was at ABC as (White House correspondent?), during the Poppy BUSH and CLINTON presidencies, when he diminished anything Democratic and then openly acted as the BUSH Family Evil Empire consigliere, a de facto family member with entry to family social functions. Then at Faux he would mock Dan RATHER's sign-off of "Courage" with his "Unafraid" and verbally assault Juan WILLIAMS every Sunday like out of Django Unchained.
As for BAIER, he acted like Darth RUMSFELD's favorite kid for fawning interviews. Yeah, those two are "Centrist" to MALONE.

https://www.mediaite.com/tv/is-john-malone-responsible-for-axing-your-show-brian-stelter-guest-addresses-the-elephant-in-the-room-during-cnns-reliable-sources-swan-song/
.... During the shows last-ever panel discussion on Sunday, Claire Atkinson chief media correspondent for Insider referenced John Malone, a prominent shareholder of CNNs parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, during a discussion about the future of the network. Malone denied being directly involved in the cancellation of host Brian Stelters show, but has been open about his desire to see CNN become more centrist. (I would like to see CNN evolve back to the kind of journalism that it started with, and actually have journalists, Malone said last year, citing Fox News Bret Baier and Brit Hume as positive examples.)
In the first half of the broadcast, Stelter and his guests mostly danced around the subject of Malone and Warner Brothers Discovery leadership. But Atkinson broached the topic head on.
I think thats a good question that people are asking: Is John Malone responsible for axing your show? Atkinson said. I dont know the answer to that. I think people might suspect its political. Hes a libertarian who believes in not paying taxes if he can avoid it He said hes not directly not involved. Thats an interesting quote. But then, I think hes a businessman. Hes looking at where the money is, where the audience is. And the viewership on the left is split between CNN and MSNBC, and the viewership on the right is all at Fox News. They have a bigger audience, lots of money, and perhaps hes saying, You know what, if we shift a little bit this way, maybe well get that, too.'
There definitely will be more change, Stelter added.
