The Final Days of the Trump White House: Chaos and Scattered Papers

Four days before the end of the Trump presidency, a White House aide peered into the Oval Office and was startled, if not exactly surprised, to see all of the president’s personal photos still arrayed behind the Resolute Desk as if nothing had changed — guaranteeing that the final hours would be a frantic dash mirroring the prior four years.

In the area known as the outer Oval Office, boxes had been brought in to pack up desks used by President Donald Trump’s assistant and personal aides. But documents were strewed about, and the boxes stood nearly empty. The table in Trump’s private dining room off the Oval Office was stacked high with papers until the end, as it had been for his entire term.

Upstairs in the White House residence, there were, however, a few signs that Trump had finally realized his time was up. Papers he had accumulated in his last several months in office had been dropped into boxes, roughly two dozen of them, and not sent to the National Archives. Aides had even retrieved letters from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and given them to Trump in the final weeks, according to notes described to The New York Times.

Where all of that material ended up is not clear. What is plain, though, is that Trump’s haphazard handling of government documents — a chronic problem — contributed to the chaos he created after he refused to accept his loss in November 2020, unleashed a mob on Congress and set the stage for his second impeachment. His unwillingness to let go of power, including refusing to return government documents collected while he was in office, has led to a potentially damaging, and entirely avoidable, legal battle that threatens to engulf the former president and some of his aides.

The documents didn’t “end up” in mal.

Trump stole the highly classified documents, secreted them in MAL, and then lied about them.

As the saying goes, there, I fixed that for you.

you can magically declare everything within sight "declassified" it doesn't take as long to pack things up.

Trump had no idea what the protocols of the presidency were and showed absolutely no interest in learning.

He truly "ruled" as if he were king.

He was, and remains, totally unfit to be president.

The only employment he had was with the Trump Organization. Because of his father.

that he totally screwed the Trump Organization up as well.

I remember reading several years ago that if he took his inheritance (rumored to be somewhere in the $400 million range) and invested it in the S&P 500 he would have been worth far more now than after all of his "arts of the deals".

In other words, as a business man, he totally sucks.

This was not a mistake. It might have been chaos but that’s no excuse. This was intentional

.... and an unintended mad rush for the door.

Biden was off playing golf with Obama for the entire month of December 2020 and January 2021 and could not be located.

trDUMP hung around the White House to provide coverage until Biden could be found. trDUMP had the very best interests of America in his mind because he so loves America.

he'd have access to the inventory, and could have requested the return of anything that was legit you can tell me he'd think twice about leaving the oval a neck deep mess.

Do you think anyone has gone through the super duper secure server that holds the notes to some of those awkward phone conversations with certain foreign leaders and oligarchs?

Remember how he used to insist all of it be put into the secure server? Even though it didn't seem quite proper?

when they roll the garbage cans into the halls and the kids start pitching crap out of their lockers willy nilly. Where was the Chief of Staff? Where was the frickin’ White House Staff Secretary whose job is to be responsible for documents, and who gets what?

It was illegal to take the stuff. ILLEGAL, and everybody in the place knew it — including Trump.
