Amazon to shut down its Amazon Care telehealth service at end of year
Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN) is ending on one of its biggest forays into health care, according to a memo sent to employees Wednesday.
The Seattle-based tech giants employer-based service, Amazon Care, "isnt the right long-term solution for our enterprise customers, said Neil Lindsay, senior vice president of Amazon Health Services, in the email to Amazon Health Services employees, a copy of which was provided by Amazon to the Business Journal.
The decision comes as Amazon has been linked to potential multibillion-dollar deals to acquire health care companies One Medical and Signify Health. Amazon announced in July it plans to acquire One Medical for $3.9 billion and now it's reported to be a bidder for Signify Health.
Amazon Care's telehealth service allows patients to use an app to chat or video conference with health care providers and set up home visits for services such as blood draws, screenings and vaccinations.
