Embattled Texas megachurch pastor quits after admitting to 'unhealthy' Instagram relationship
Matt Chandler, the lead pastor at the Village Church, which operates under the Southern Baptist sect, announced this week that he's resigning his position after having an Instagram relationship. Chandler, who is married with three children, told his flock, "I fell short."
Christianity Today explained that the elders in the church discovered Chandler's secret, reviewing some of the comments he'd made on the social media site. They found that the direct messages he exchanged "revealed something unhealthy."
Chandler is an anti-Choice pastor who once called rape victims "worse than Hitler." His church also "disciplined" a female church member for wanting to divorce her husband after she discovered he was watching adult videos sexually exploiting children. The man was later prosecuted by the FBI. After a huge backlash, the church issued an apology.
Calling the actions "unguarded and unwise," Chandler said he agreed with the assessment from the elders and was grateful for their spiritual oversight.
______
It all began when Chandler was approached by a woman who said she was disturbed by the way Chandler was talking to her friend on Instagram.

(11,736 posts)I do not condone extramarital relationships in any way. They are often destructive to all involved and children are usually hurt the worst when the marriage falls apart. That is just my personal view. That said, there are a great many complicated issues that lead to them...
If the man was simply a man, going through problems in his life and in his marriage, then that would be that, sad, but common. The problem is that these people scam other people by painting this picture of a "holier than thou" moral and spiritual leader. They condemn in the most heartless ways, people who struggle, with addiction and with human failings. They offer little compassion, just scorn and contempt, then when they get caught doing EXACTLY what they were condemning, then "I fell short". How about, "I accepted the Devil and gladly allowed myself to be corrupted". Isn't that what those preachers say about other people who may be gay, or maybe had an affair?
I am not a fan of systems that moralize and condemn people, telling them they will suffer for eternity for transgressions in the short, difficult, and confusing lives we have on this planet. We can work toward living our best lives, trying not to hurt others, and working toward the wellbeing of all, without all that other crap.
