I believe Garland would like to avoid a trial if it's possible to nail Trump without one.

As you said, part of the pleasure for BTK was discussing the details of his crime. A psychopath is typically driven by the pleasure of committing the crime, getting away with it, then reliving it, which is why most keep "souvenirs".

In my opinion, if Trump had not been born into a wealthy family but had a similarly abusive upbringing, he would likely have ended up in prison or dead a long time ago as a petty criminal.
