It's important to realize that DOJ has long known what Trump took.

Because of logs registering the chain-of-custody of these documents DOJ knew precisely what Trump took as early as late winter 2021.

Which means:

They surely knew which documents had not been returned in June of this year. (That means they didn't need human intelligence to tell them that Trump still retained documents, although they might have benefited by knowing where these documents may be at Mar-a-Largo.)

They know if he still hasn't returned documents and what those documents are.

Since none of these documents are originals, they know what is contain in them and what Trump has "over them" if he was to threaten blackmail.

************************************

There are likely more implications but we should understand DOJ has known what Trump took nearly from the beginning.

Why has this not been broadcast? I'm guessing but think our security forces wouldn't want adversaries to know we've been running damage assessment from the beginning and have already changed what we could.

Would CIA, FBI, or any agency give the original analysis to the president? They don't just make a single copy, after all.

There was the possibility those documents not returned had been destroyed. Trump having been known to loosely handle this material may have not sufficiently recorded its destruction. It was only after being tipped off they hadn't been returned and knew from witnesses they weren't destroyed, but still remained that they moved to retrieve them. Now what happened to the remaining material? That's another mystery. I think there's every reason to believe there are still unaccounted for documents, but their fate may remain a mystery. Did he sell them, loose them, destroy them, his staff was such a clown show towards the end, I doubt anyone knows for sure. Particularly if some were destroyed. These weren't the kind of people that kept good records of what they destroyed.

but also the contents of what was missing.

After all there are originals at the separate agencies and then again with the compilers/preparers/analysts.

There are actually many “originals.”
