Florida flies “illegal immigrants” to Martha’s Vineyard

September 14, 2022

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday flew two planes of immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard, escalating a tactic by Republican governors to draw attention to what they consider to be the Biden administration’s failed border policies.

Flights to the upscale island enclave in Massachusetts were part of an effort to “transport illegal immigrants to sanctuary destinations,” said Taryn Fenske, DeSantis’ communications director.

While DeSantis’ office didn’t elaborate on their legal status, many migrants who cross the border illegally from Mexico are temporarily shielded from deportation after being freed by U.S. authorities to pursue asylum in immigration court — as allowed under U.S law and international treaty — or released on humanitarian parole.

Massachusetts’ Gov. Charlie Baker, a Republican, said he was in touch with local officials and that short-term shelter was being provided.

Martha’s Vineyard n Nantucket don’t get much winter business. I think this is cruel n outrageous. No negotiations or even a heads up when sending these people to blue cities n the poor people not knowing what is happening to them. We are just now finding out about DeSantis sending these people to Martha’s Vineyard. I read it first here. I wonder how the citizens of Florida feel about it.

What can I do while my asylum case is pending?

People with pending asylum applications or cases who have been waiting a long time without a decision are allowed to apply for employment authorization. The length of time is currently 150 days (though the Trump Administration tried to change it to 365 days).

If you are granted asylum, you are immediately authorized to work. (Some asylees choose to obtain EADs for convenience or identification purposes, but an EAD is not necessary to work if you are an asylee.)

I think this👇 but not positive

All refugees arriving in the United States are entitled to 8 months of Refugee Cash Assistance (RCA) from the date of their U.S. arrival. The RCA amounts vary based on the size of the family: Single person ($230/month), Family of 2 ($363/Month), Family of 3 ($485/month), Family of 4 ($611/month), etc.

Gotta be honest.... Just doing a quick Google search shows how complicated the immigration process is. I'm guessing that's what most of the non-profit help is, navigating the nightmare.

DeSantis is a very cruel person and we should deal with him as such. I hope (and trust) that our governor Lamont is wise to him. DeSantis might want to fly immigrants here in New Haven as a jab at our liberal city and the added benefit of trying to embarrass Yale (DeSantis' alma mater).

is the most cynical and cruel use of human beings as pawns as I have ever seen.

MV residents seem to have banded together to find temporary shelter for the fifty people (INCLUDING CHILDREN) who were left to fend for themselves.

DeSantis is a literal scumbag. And people cheering this on on Fox News and other places are really incapable of empathy and compassion.

He doesn't have a decent bone in his body nor in his soul (what there is of it). And he is smart, unlike most other repukes. If we have any vulnerability he will find it and exploit it. He will find any anything he can to undermine Democrats, those seeking office and those already in office.
