For years the right wing outlets have been telling the younger people they will never collect it because it will go broke, and it should be privatized, and a lot of people believe that crap, and I know that from first hand experience because people where I worked were repeating that crap.
The irony is if enough people believe that BS, then it will happen.
The assholes pushing that of course have no worry about their social or Medicare, and their attitude is I got mine, screw everyone else.
The selfishness of many in this country is astounding
The republicans have been trying to dismantle it since its inception, and they might have started that process during George W Bush, if it wasnt for the stock market crash and economic implosion
We are indeed in a very perilous situation

Red State voters don't care how much Republicans make them suffer.

They will be hoping for people being selfish, and not caring for future generations
I say this because I have heard from some on social security say it wont be my problem

(6,044 posts)The cola formula is not sacred and Republicans may start there to reduce benefits. The people who think its not their problem will get rolled when they reach their frailest years and then Republican politicians will tell them they should be happy to die for the economy-just like that Republican in Texas told older people they should be happy to die from COVID in appreciation of the great economy.

(24,605 posts)it may depend on how many are really concerned for their children and grandchildren. Most of us would be, but there are a ton of selfish people in our country.

Also, they sat those already collecting will be grandfathered in, but why would we trust them? Will they cut our benefits? There certainly won't be any more COAs. I thin k we have to be ready to raise holy hell whether or not we already have it. Now PJB won't go along with it so I wonder if they weill be able to override a veto.

(24,605 posts)Every person running should be pounding away the message that republicans will destroy Social Security and Medicare. I do agree that we must be ready to raise holy hell, but for now, I'm hoping we avoid that by keeping control of Congress.

(35,454 posts)And you know what, those lawmakers get a healthy pension and medical and still collect their SS. I remember reading that John McCain had his Navy pension, his Senate paycheck and still collected his SS when he came of age. And a rich wife to boot.

(6,044 posts)Kaiser Permanente is being sued by feds and Cigna also. They found ways to massively increase their income by claiming recipients they serve are sicker than they actually are. Yet at the same time they were not providing them with enhanced treatment.
These advantage plans are draining Medicare and have never cut costs as was the original I claim.
The freebies they offer are essentially bribes. Sadly many members dont know that they may not receive the best medical care. best medical care.
I am an advantage care member and it is very hard to switch to regular Medicare because a switch after the initial enrollment at 65 can be done but one has lost the opportunity for automatic acceptance by a supplementary insurance company.
American capitalism is not capitalism when it simply feeds off the government instead of risking capital.

(9,257 posts)...YET they CONTINUE TO VOTE FOR REPUBLICANS WHO HAVE TOLD THEM THEY PLAN TO TAKE IT AWAY. Their attitude IS "I GOT MINE FUCK YOU". They don't give a damn about me or their own kids. Their attitude is that it's "their problem".
I've told them what Republicans intend to do with their social security & Medicare. Their response:
"Oh they ALL say that! They're just trying to scare people! They'll never do away with that stuff. People won't LET them!"
Hello?
Republicans are trying their damnedest (and will probably succeed) to ensure that they DON'T NEED our votes to get elected. If they lose, they can just declare "fraud" and declare their own candidates the "winner" even they lost. JUST LIKE TRUMP TRIED TO DO. And if it takes VIOLENCE to do it, they're on board with that.
Now, once "people" (ie: voters) HAVE NO VOICE any longer in who is in power - they aren't going to give a RAT'S ASS what people want, need or what makes them mad because they will in NO way be accountable to the voters anymore. THAT is when we will be under an authoritarian dictatorship/fascist state.
MY RELATIVES EITHER DON'T GROK THIS OR DON'T BELIEVE IT OR DON'T GIVE A DAMN. Or all of the aforementioned.
So - YEP. What you have said is true. And their kids always say they won't count on social security & Medicare because they know it won't be there - AND THEY VOTE REPUBLICAN too - making it a SELF-FULFILLING PROPHESY by doing so.
The problem is these assholes are not only hurting THEMSELVES -- they are devastating ALL OTHER SENIORS and the rest of us who will also be seniors some day. Because of their goddamned ignorance/racism/sexism/anti-government hate and their Fox/Facebook programmed lame brains.
This is why people need to VOTE! ESPECIALLY in midterms. Because these assholes will be voting. Guaranteed. And they BADLY need to be outnumbered! Or we're ALL screwed.

(4,397 posts)but Republican schemes to destroy it STILL need 60 votes in the Senate to make it happen. Even if we lost control of the Senate, I don't see that happening...
... and even if they took control and abolished the filibuster to do it-- there are a lot of old people with guns....
I trust they would get what was coming to them.
