https://www.mediamatters.org/bloomberg/have-you-heard-about-gop-plan-either-gut-social-safety-net-or-destroy-economyPerhaps the single most consequential story of the midterms season broke this week, and theres been virtually no coverage from major TV news shows, newspapers, and other mainstream outlets.
On Tuesday, Bloomberg Government produced a bombshell report that points to the massive economic consequences a Republican House would bring for Americans.
If Republicans gain a majority following next months elections, the outlet reported, they plan to use a future increase or suspension of the debt ceiling as leverage to force through top priorities like seismic cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and other social safety net spending. Failure to act on the debt ceiling would result in an economic catastrophe, experts say.
There has been shockingly little coverage of this development given its significance. It earned a scattering of mentions in publications including New York magazine. And Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and MSNBCs Chris Hayes detailed the stakes on his show Wednesday night.

(26,337 posts)After all what they are proposing is literally going to kill millions of Americans who will be homeless and lose medical care and die as the result of the Republicans getting their way like they seem hellbent on trying to achieve and that will also cause an economic ripple effect economic that will devastate the econcomy as it will take billions upon billions out of it.

(7,243 posts)Been saying it for years - call their bluff! You cannot negotiate with them. Make them own the economic disaster that will follow. Give them what Mencken wanted for them.
Biden: Democrats - concede nothing. Give them the back of your hand. Republicans - if you dont lift the debt ceiling, what follows is all on you. Its all yours. Im going to ride my bike

Mister Ed
(5,945 posts)It's not saying that no one, anywhere, has ever mentioned the matter.
The OP and linked article cite Bloomberg Government as an example of an outlet that has reported the story. The linked article goes on to say:
Those who rely on the listed examples for their news will not have heard of this matter. I'd venture to say that's most Americans - or at least most Americans who are even interested in news at all.

(36,371 posts)I see the story about Republican plans to cut social security at MSNBC, WP, NYT. NPR, Yahoo News, HuffPo, PBS, CBS News, NBC News, etc..
Here's a link to the CBS News story:

Mister Ed
(5,945 posts)And it also looks as though, while Media Matters' list of specific newspapers and programs that haven't featured the story may be technically correct, many of those same news organizations are running the story online.
That, for me, creates the hope that we may soon see the story touched upon in nightly network news broadcasts and Sunday-morning talk shows as well. Which would be good. Voters need such information to make informed choices.

(5,945 posts)But your point still stands: the story is getting legs, and that's good.
Kaleva
(36,371 posts)But we both agree that the story has legs and is getting pretty good coverage now.
It may be more accurate to say the article in the OP is no longer up to date with what's happening now.
I don't access all of those news outlets but I have seen it on several of those you mention.

(21,447 posts)Hold the nation hostage by not raising the debt ceiling in return for massive spending cuts.
Also, not mentioned, McCarthy said, on national TV, that he is going to impose the exact same economic plan that Britain imposed, trickle down economics, more tax cuts for the rich and more deregulation.

Scrolling across the bottom -- 17 days until midterm elections, and a bunch of diddly shit that should be local, not national, news.
If this is representative of tv news today, it's pathetic.
