Sotomayor on Clarence Thomas: 'I believe not everyone can reach their bootstraps'

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor on Thursday said that fellow Justice Clarence Thomas “cares about legal issues differently than me,” adding that she thinks “not everyone” can pull themselves up by their bootstraps.

Sotomayor, speaking at Chicago’s Roosevelt University, praised her colleague and said that he “cares about people.”

“He cares about legal issues differently than me,” the liberal Sotomayor said of her conservative colleague, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

“Clarence, who grew up very poor, believes that everyone is capable of pulling themselves up by their bootstraps. I believe not everyone can reach their bootstraps.”

"She had the same opportunities as the rest of us," he said.

No, Clarence, she was the one who took care of your parents and raised the youngest children. She was middle-aged and uneducated by the time all her family responsibilities were done. If he couldn't see what was going on in his own family, he sure isn't going to have empathy with anyone else.

...once her mother improved enough to not need such time and attention, she went off assistance and got work. The mother too, unless I'm misremembering that part also.

It seemed to me to be a textbook example of what welfare was for. Not the abuse of the system that that very small and vindictive man liked to call it in order to play to the biases of the crowd he so much wanted to be part of.

... some people are under other peoples' boots. Some people have a strap whipping their backs... and he says, "Just pull yourself up by your boot straps." Ain't that a kick in the head.

If, in fact, one could pull themselves “up” by their bootstraps, folks who don’t have boots are just shit out of luck. Likewise, those who have boots with no straps.

In fact, if I recall correctly, it was coined to mock that attitude but got adopted for what it had been intended to mock.

Much like using "a rising tide lifts all boats" to sell supply-side economics. No tide rises from the top down.

That while a rising tide lifts the yachts as well as the dinghy’s and rowboats in the harbor, at high tide the yachts are still yachts and the dinghy’s still dinghy’s.
