Personally, I have no problem with pot or shrooms, but these guys are scum....

https://www.newsday.com/long-island/crime/drugs-candy-west-islip-bay-shore-yb94f95t

Two Suffolk shops, including one less than 1,000 feet from a middle school, sold edible marijuana and psychedelic mushrooms in what appeared to be name-brand candy wrapping, law enforcement officials said Wednesday in announcing charges against the businesses' owner and three employees.

Search warrants were executed Tuesday at Legit 100 Smoke Shop in West Islip and Exit 42 Deli in Bay Shore, both owned by Ali Anwar, 44, of West Islip.

Authorities seized large quantities of prepackaged candy bars and other sugary treats that were marketed to children and contained either the psychedelic mushroom compound psilocybin, or marijuana, according to law enforcement officials.

The candy was meant to look identical to a brand name item but typically had one letter changed on the packaging, said Det. Lt. Dylan Friedlander, commanding officer of the Suffolk County Police Department's Third Squad.

most small time dispensaries don't have the ability to convincingly counterfeit 'package' - so, where are these 'products' coming from?

And - that completely leaves aside the (truly gullible) notion that innocent middle schoolers were detouring to the 'Legit Smoke Shop' for their Snicker bar. 'Cause, who would have thought .. ?
(never mind the price differential .. )

This will be the big Halloween scare this year. Expect more stories about marijuana candy. They've got to use something to stop cannabis sales. There won't be any other other issue that can scare people about cannabis. And honestly, drug overdoses are pretty unusual as far as cannabis and shrooms go. People might think they're losing minds for a little while, but it's not usual for them to take a fatal overdose of either drug.

"It was not disguised," Friedlander said at a news conference Wednesday in Yaphank. " … This was packaged for to be enticing to people that like candy. Typically children like candy. And it was clearly labeled saying what [narcotics] it contained."

"Typically children like candy"
Newsflash - adults like candy too.
Now if these mopes are actually selling this product to children .. Different story. But .. we haven't heard anything to that effect.

No money in it, kids being light on income.

Such packaging is a joke aimed at older people. It may be in poor taste, but lots of jokes are.

They shouldn't really have been selling it, though. In New York it's legal to possess the stuff, but a license is required to sell it, and nobody has one yet.

This is just a small-time cop-shop showing off not just how industrious it is, but how stupid its people are as well.

I'd be very disappointed in them if they fell for a dumb, fake story.

On the other hand, though, the story sounds absolutely ridiculous. Who the hell knows.

The one thing you can reliably know in any situation is that the truth is nowhere near what a police spokesperson says happened.

Looks like tight wing authoritarian bullshit to scapegoat or could be true if individuals were that stupid about earning illicit money or otherwise ill-willed.

Nothing depraved is that much surprising these days but crap like this has been reported for at least the last 50 years by the usual suspects.

They may not have been marketing specifically to kids, but kids are still kids and knew about the "Skattles" or whatever. They know how to get vape stuff, and booze and bags of pot.

The store will sell to whoever has cash, and kids often have a lot more cash than you think.

It's a smoke shop, not a novelty store, so no ones kidding anyone about where it's ending up. Most likely shown around the schools by amateur badasses bragging.

still not sold on targeting (or even selling to) minors

Well - there's a whole bunch of places out there that won't sell a pack of cigarettes to underaged - so, I guess I'm still waiting to see how many 'kids' actually purchased psilocybin product in this dispensary (or hooka shop, or whatever).

The State of New York wouldn't let them locate anywhere near a school. In addition, legal dispensaries haven't opened yet. New York State licensed dispensaries for recreational cannabis won't be open until around the beginning of 2023.

There are licensed dispensaries for medical cannabis open now, but that place is not one of them, guaranteed. They're highly regulated with armed guards at the entrance. I've been inside of them, I know.

The State will probably close them down and refuse their application for sale when recreational cannabis stores officially open.

This is happening all over New York at the moment. Everyone wants to jump the gun, especially in College towns. Why these money grabbing jerks can't wait a few more months is beyond me. These idiots just cut their own throats.
