Let's understand how Twitter works.
When you sign up for a Twitter account, one of the first pages you see will be a list of possible persons/orgs to follow.
It will be general stuff, like Rihanna or maybe a Kardashian...
That's because Twitter doesn't KNOW you yet.
If your primary interest is ARCHAEOLOGY and Ancient Culture... you might type in the search box "Archaeology Magazine" and then you click FOLLOW.
Next you type in Mary Beard... and you follow her...
So you read some content from those TWO and the Twitter algorithm gets the idea and starts suggesting you other people and organizations to follow and read...
Maybe
Smithsonian? Natural History Museum in London?
Cambridge and Oxford Archaeology pages?
Guess what, you'll never see a word spoken by Trump or see a single MAGAT conspiracy theory.
If you're seeing nasty crap in your feed it's because you're involved in the "food fight" personally.
The Twitter algorithm feeds people tweets to MAKE THEM ENGAGE.
So when you start popping into the feeds of Trump, Cruz, DeSantis and Noem and start trolling them...
The algorithm identifies you as someone to start feeding controversial shit to, so that you will engage and make more tweets and replies.
Twitter IS what YOU make it.
YOUR Twitter experience is a reflection of you.

Most of us would prefer not to have that happen. Most of us would like to limit the harm caused to our lives by idiots on Twitter. Whether we are on Twitter ourselves or not.

(7,233 posts)Twitter's at a complete loss when it comes to gauging what might interest me.
I must have thousands of accounts muted (I never block them), and each time I mute one, it tells me it'll use the information to "improve" my timeline and experience, when all I want to do at that point is mute an individual, usually for good reasons, and I fail to see any improvement, not that it matters much. The "For you" tab of stories it feeds me on search is very hit-or-miss indeed, and "Popular" tweets at the end are just mystifying, along with what the Twitter algorithm seems to consider humorous.
But your OP point is well made. Like any half-decent platform, it lets you tailor your experience to an extent. If you're consistently seeing just rubbish, you probably need to learn how to drive it.

Granted, if you can resist that temptation, you can exist in a bubble.
But this ignores the ubiquity of social media.

(12,440 posts)Everything the AI does is trying to get you logged in to Twitter LONGER and engaging MORE.
They've done a lot of research... and they take advantage of the gratification people get from other people giving them an "attaboy" and they take advantage of human propensity for anger and hatred by feeding you stuff that will enrage you.
Follow Tiedrich, Pelosi, Lincoln Project and Schiff... the algorithm will feed you crap about Bannon and Stone. Why? Because Twitter WANTS you to rage and troll and post memes... and like others and follow more.
And what's the purpose?
If you respond to someone on Twitter with facts and logic, they will respond with a meme of Trump riding a stallion with a sword in hand and laugh at you.
It's a waste.

(7,517 posts)People may follow someone for one thing - say from sports - may follow someone you don't want to see - say from politics - so you will see posts from those you don't want to see. Happens all the time. Saying "you'll never seen posts from someone you don't want to see if just completely false, no matter how much you want to say "they" are doing it wrong."
This is about what the 40th post you've made extolling the virtues of twitter. We get it, you love it and you may love musk too. These kinds of posts promoting twitter also have one very basic flaw, as in the can't see the forest for the trees mindset. Which to me is part of the whole "I've got mine jack" or "every man for himself" that permeates the RW way of approaching life. Social media, as has been shown in every election since 2016, can have a very negative effect on our democracy. Having the mindset that I'll just do what I want, I don't care about the overall effect is, that is part of the reason this country is in the trouble it is in.

(16,829 posts)I am a daily twitter user. I retweet news stories on a certain range of topics not having to do with US politics. I follow things that are of interest to me. If I see an offensive tweet, I unfollow that person. But that hardly ever happens.
I learn a lot and share a lot on twitter. Every week I see that I have new followers and some who have had their accounts suspended. I don't pay attention.
Its a net positive for me.

But still, if the tweets I receive change and I start seeing an increase in RW, or if most of my few interest groups (my peoples) move to another platform, or if Musk implements ID verification to tie our legal names to the decade of data he bought...I'm gone.

Also, keep in mind, you can follow/unfollow Topics. Just go to:

(6,589 posts)I have about 20 Lists, most Private (so only I see them) for different topics. When I view a List I only see tweets from accounts that I've put on the list.
For example, some of my Lists include:
National News - Major media sources I trust & dozens of reporters who write for them
Local News - News sources & reporters local to my area
[My State] - Other Twitter members who live in the same state I do, I often use that list to coordinate local political activities
Weather - News sources that cover the weather in my area
Legal - This is a big one for me, this list has dozens of attorneys, law professors, SCOTUS watchers, & people who follow & live-tweet trials from the courtroom, it allows me to know about court filings & decisions seconds after they're filed & read copies of the court docs
Music & Entertainment - This is the list where I follow bands I like, local venues, ticket sellers, & promoters for local events (like our annual Mardi Gras Festival)
Humor - Accounts that tweet funny stuff, for when I just want to unwind & laugh before bed
That's a small sampling of my Lists, just as an example.
Sympthsical
(9,073 posts)Whenever people complain about what shows up in their feeds, my first question is, "So where are you poking around that the algorithm thinks you want to see that? Because you're obviously engaging somewhere with this shit." But people act all innocent about their habits. Like this stuff just arrives, and then blame the platform.
If you're at a bar and ordering drinks, the bartender's going to assume you're interested in drinks.
I don't get political stuff on my FB or Twitter, because I don't get into those things there. My FB ads have been all clothing the past two weeks. I went poking around looking for a good pair of jeans for hiking, so now my page is just different men's clothing content for now. (Why is that guy storing a gallon of milk in his pants?!)
My problem with Twitter is other people. It makes them dumb, and they somehow start making sure I see it by pretending it's a news source. Forget the average person. The number of "news" articles I see that are really just, "Three randos on Twitter had this reaction to something."
What happens on Twitter isn't "news".
That's the part that is like 90% of my ire towards the platform. How it infects other parts of the internet unbidden because people can't manage their addiction and can't understand that other people don't want to take a hit.
Beautiful Disaster
(667 posts)I anticipate it'll go right back to being a cesspool that you can only hide from if you lock your account and I don't want to do that because it pretty much kills any level of engagement (if your account is locked, only people who follow you, that you've approved, can see your tweets).
I have no problem with dissenting opinions. In fact, sometimes a debate with someone who doesn't share my views can be nice. They can also get heated but I can step away from that and move on.
But you're naive if you think it's always been this way.
Back in 2016, it was a hell space. It was a mess of unregulated accounts fueled by neo-Nazis who doxxed and attacked anyone and everyone who dared mention specific buzzwords.
In 2016, I made a tweet about how my grandfather hated holocaust deniers because, while serving in World War II, he came across the liberated or abandoned camps and the smell of each camp haunted him - a smell he could never get over. Not even 60 or so years after having left the war.
That's all I tweeted. That was it. It was in response to Trump supporters denying the holocaust. But it wasn't to anyone specific. I didn't reply to a tweet. I didn't quote a tweet. I just mentioned it as a status to those who were following me.
Within a couple hours, I was flooded with Nazi accounts, hundreds and hundreds, attacking me with some of the most vile, antisemitic crap you could think of. I had dozens of people calling my grandfather a liar and saying he should be hanged for peddling Jew propaganda. This went on for the days. I barely interacted with any of these accounts, especially after the first few came after me. It was a constant assault, hour after hour, where I'd get a thousand messages just over and over and over again.
Then they attempted to take over my account. In those days, I had a dozen-plus unauthorized log-ins and had to keep changing my password. It was clear they were trying to take control of the account and fortunately, it didn't happen - but it was a pain in the ass.
By that point, I nearly gave up and deleted my twitter account. It was insane. I have never, in all my years on social media, experienced anything like that. It was awful.
So, yeah, you're dead wrong. 100% completely wrong. Unequivocally wrong. Flat-out wrong. Brazenly wrong. Foolishly wrong.
The only reason it stopped was that, around 2017 or whatever, Twitter started cracking down on these accounts. They were removed.
And that means you weren't assaulted day-after-day by hundreds of trolls whose accounts were never deleted because in those days, Twitter was hands off on it.
Then they got hands on and started banning accounts for violating terms and services. Elon has said he's reversing that.
So, unless you lock your account, so your tweets don't show up, any level of remarks, even if they're not in reply to someone, that is political or social will bring about trolls.
Trolls whose accounts were banned a few years ago but will now be given the chance to return.
Finally, it's fucking insulting that you would claim people who were attacked on twitter back in 2016 and 2017 are responsible for those attacks. Maybe you should go read up on the (()) movement and how there was a coordinated effort to go after anyone who was thought to be Jewish and attack them constantly on twitter.
THAT was snuffed out when Twitter cracked down on troll accounts.
But as I said, Elon has said he'll allow them back.
And those accounts weren't attacking just because you interacted with someone - they were attacking because you had the audacity to tweet out your own thoughts. That should never lead to that level of hate. Sorry, I just disagree with you there.
All I did was say my grandpa hated holocaust deniers and it triggered an avalanche of hate from people I had never ever interacted with before.
THAT's the Twitter we're gonna get with Elon. An unregulated mess of a website that allows trolls to harass anyone.
