Hours before citizens across the country cast their votes in a contentious midterm election, a sinister red moon will loom in the sky. The last total lunar eclipse of 2022 is set to stain the moon red during the wee hours of Tuesday morning. Residents across both coasts will be able to watch the spectacle for just under 90 minutes.
Total lunar eclipses, commonly known as blood moons, only happen during full moons when the Earth completely shields the moon from the sun. Once the sun, earth and the moon are exactly aligned, light from simultaneous sunrises and sunsets around the earth project onto the moon, briefly causing a coppery-red coat on the moons surface. The more dust or clouds in the Earths atmosphere during the eclipse, the redder the moon will appear, according to NASA.
From the moon, the total lunar eclipse would shine a bright red aura around the Earths dark surface.

(82,849 posts)That'll be the Republican excuse for their losses on Election Day. Gotta work better than admitting you don't have a platform or a plan to govern, and certainly better than the Republican record of the last six years.

Around that time of the morning we're usually cloudy. The moon will be near the horizon and I'm on the east-facing slope of a hill. I don't think I'll get to see much, but I'll try to get up extra-early anyway.

(75,855 posts)In the last 10 or so years, every time some cool astronomical event occurred it clouded over a for a few days.
The only exception was a few weeks ago when Jupiter came it's closest to earth for another century.
Other than that, pffffttt!

(36,631 posts)On a more serious note, I just saw my first horizontal meteor. Took the dogs out for a walk in the moonlight, stopped while they were nosing around, looked up while facing north to check for stars or cloud cover, and a bright light went streaking east to west. I had time to think, "That's too fast for an aircraft. WTH?" It brightened and went out and then it dawned on me that it was a meteor. I've only ever seen them descending through the air, never horizonal before. No frame of reference for size or distance, but my impression was small and near.
