Apparently Republicans now want to raise the age of voting to 21 because 18-21yos voted in droves in the Midterms. This is the same Republican Party that believes that an 18yo is mature enough to purchase an AR15 and a 10yo is old enough to be a mom.
Take all the time you need with that.

Bernardo de La Paz
(49,047 posts)But, and this may be a quibble, I was expecting age at enlistment because you wrote "enlistee" instead of something like "enlisted". I think they are technically and practically the same and it was just me reading a bit too much into it. 27 yo at time of enlistment would be very surprising, but as an average age of currently serving members (phrase too big), it seems about right.

(14,864 posts)18 is the traditional age of adulthood under many aspects of the law, and that should be the only consideration. Military service was a convenient foil in the past, but was never really a solid argument.
An 18 year old can be anything a 21 year old can be. In fact, many hold jobs side by side with them.
To say they aren't mature enough to vote is an insult. Yes, we do restrict drinking (which is wrong) and some gun ownership (which is right), but we shouldn't take a major civil right away because it favors one party.
If the gop wants to change that, appeal to younger voters.
The Grand Illuminist
(1,337 posts)Also add gambling and tobacco and e vape purchase and possession. Little things that was once legal at 18 which is now bumped to 21 adds up. In 10 years, we would more likely see the rise of states raising the drivers license age from 16 to 21.
When there are propositions of age raising, no matter how good or bad, be concerning. As the saying goes, "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."
getagrip_already
(14,864 posts)Driving at 17/18 is a real help t families who's parents are run ragged by having to drive their kids everywhere. You will really piss off families, as well as businesses who rely on mobile young adults to be able to get to work.
You would be stranding a generation who wouldn't be able to work until they turn 21, and in reality, 22 since it takes time to get licensed. And they would have to live at home during that time since they couldn't work. Public transportation doesn't work except in select few locales.
That is never going to happen because of grass roots opposition from adults and businesses.
Sorry.
The Grand Illuminist
(1,337 posts)Nobody thought that they would raise the drinking age, yet they did. Same for tobacco. The overall is that if there is legislation that deals with raising the age either for good or bad, I would be concerned. Because it will be weaponized for the right.

(36,147 posts)The Twenty-sixth Amendment (Amendment XXVI) to the United States Constitution prohibits the states and the federal government from using age as a reason for denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States who are at least eighteen years old.
It was proposed by Congress on March 23, 1971, and three-fourths of the states ratified it by July 1, 1971.
3/4 state ratification took less than four months. No way a counter amendment proposal would be ratified, nevermind in a few months.

Bernie Sanders is over 80 years old and yet he enjoys great popularity among younger voters. Bernie gets it.
Gabriel claims the minds of 18 year olds "are not fully developed". I'll bet this asswipe supports 18 year olds being able to purchase automatic weapons, though (as long as they do not practice the Islamic faith). And it is also OK to send them to fight and die in bullshit wars like in Iraq. Yet how many voters in their 60s, and older are truly of sound mind? Funny how the Repukes don't say anything about the older end of the spectrum.
And if anyone feels I am being mean or unfair to older folks, I am of Social Security age myself. And I will be the first to say that there is a large group of them who are gullible, uninformed and possessing no intellectual curiosity.

(1,789 posts)For the sake of argument let's say this happens. What happens next is that the earth goes around the sun a few times and lo and behold the 18 year olds are 21. Then they vote for the party they were going to vote for when they were 18. What do the republicans do then? We all know that the answer is not that they will modify their positions to appeal to those voters.
Progress may feel too slow, but it is inexorable. Younger generations are less bigoted, racist and less convinced that reducing rich people's taxes is good for everyone. The fact that they brought this up tells me that they fear the future.
