They've called a "runoff" in Georgia, where candidates must get 50% + 1 vote to avoid it. As of this moment, Warnock has 49.6% of the vote to Walker's 48.3. There are a little over 44,000 votes left to count. If those votes went 50-50, which is not that likely considering where the media says most of them are coming from, adding 22,000 votes to his total would put him over the 50% mark, closer to 50.1%.
And the addition of about 19,000 votes moved him from 49.2 to 49.6. He won several of the counties where there are still outstanding ballots by double digit margins. It seems possible for him to get over the threshold and still win.

(3,491 posts)to credit the other 22,000 of the 44,000 to Walker. Its highly improbable that Warnock can reach the 50% threshold with the remaining votes out there. Also, you have to add the votes that went to the Libertarian candidate and the write-ins to the overall vote total.

(19,185 posts)If there are 44K votes left and Warnock got all 44K, he still doesn't get to 50%.

(3,888 posts)Dumb math mistake, forgetting to account for an additional 44,000 in the total.

(33,643 posts)I figured it out earlier based on 3.8M total votes.
Unless you have a compelling reason to believe that could be the case (which officials apparently do not), it's not going to happen.

(102,418 posts)for it--not to mention that a recount would automatically be triggered (in all likelihood) if Warnock did manage to make it to 50.1%, which would further extend the process. Is it possible they would cancel the runoff down the road if all the challenges had passed and they COULD certify him with sufficient votes to win? Quite possibly. I don't think that has ever occurred, but why not? But it does take time to plan elections so it is practical to be doing so now, regardless. (Plus the RW does not want to allow sufficient time to reopen voting registration as occurred the last time with great success).
