If they hadn't fucked over Liz Cheney....

the repubs would be in a much better position now. Not because she endorsed Democrats, but because she would be a perfect leader for them if they end up with a slim majority.

Who would be better at thinking strategically? Who would be better at instilling discipline in the caucus? Who would be a better vessel to carry their message to the electorate? Nobody in repub leadership has anything like her level of skill.

So thanks, repubs, for being idiots and assuring yourselves of repub anarchy if you get the gavel.

They are there to create chaos and own the libs. They aren't there to govern or to make government work.

They could elect Cheney to be Speaker*.

The problem is that many current Republicans don't. They want an unregulated business climate. They don't want taxes. Misery doesn't seem to bother them.

The irony of people who don't believe in government being elected to escapes their electorate.

9. If the Democrats cannot hold on I suspect the following will more-or-less happen:

Ranked in order of my perceived likelihood

Scenario 1: McCarthy is elected speaker, but has had to make so many compromises that his leadership team is loaded with MAGA. We have two years of meaningless theatrics and drama.

Scenario 2: McCarthy is elected Speaker

Scenario 3: McCarthy will not get the votes needed to be Speaker because of the "Freedom" "Party" .

A sane block (there will not be many) of Republicans will put up one of their own in a compromise with Democrats. IMO, it would have to be someone who voted for impeachment; honestly, at this point, anything non-MAGA might be OK. I don't know who and how many are left.

That person will be Speaker. The "Hastert rule" will be necessarily scrapped. Maybe, just maybe, for the first time in decades we will work together as a sanity caucus.

I am sure these scenarios can be refined expanded, or otherwise added to.
