Musk tells Twitter staff: Agree to work "long hours at high intensity" or quit now

Elon Musk has sent an ultimatum to all Twitter staff—commit to an "extremely hardcore" approach to work or quit your job by Thursday.

"Going forward, to build a breakthrough Twitter 2.0 and succeed in an increasingly competitive world, we will need to be extremely hardcore. This will mean working long hours at high intensity. Only exceptional performance will constitute a passing grade," Musk wrote in the all-staff email.

"lf you are sure that you want to be part of the new Twitter, please click yes on the link below," Musk wrote. "Anyone who has not done so by 5pm ET tomorrow (Thursday) will receive three months of severance. Whatever decision you make, thank you for your efforts to make Twitter successful."

This is a stunningly stupid way to try and run any business.

Besides the obvious problems with arbitrarily overworking an already insufficient staff, there's the basic issue Elon doesn't see, much less understand: Twitter is not a tech company. Twitter is a company that uses tech for communication and data management, like pretty much every company in the modern era, but its basic business (its "core competency" as business experts call it) is putting eyeballs in front of advertisers. None of Elon's "clever" ideas does that; none of them even try to do that -- in fact, most of them do the exact opposite by driving users and advertisers away from the "Freeze Peach" sewer he's created.

He pays "his employees", so it's like he bought them. Once they're no longer useful or he gets tired of them, he'll just throw them away and get new ones.
That's just the way he thinks. Typical Colonizer/Plantation Owner mentality.

Cartman comes into possession of the local amusement park, and decides to shut it down to everyone but himself, because he's a selfish asshole. Then one of the rides breaks down, and he has to bring in someone to fix it. And he has to pay that guy, so now he needs paying customers to the park. Then he needs to hire a ticket taker. Then folks to run the rides. Then concessions. Pretty quickly, the park is crowded, Cartman can't ride anytime he wants, and it's back to square one, and Cartman gives the part back to the previous owners.

Just picture Musk as Cartman, and you'll be pretty much caught up on Our Story So Far.

These are highly skilled engineers he's putting this to, every single one of them has a multitude of other opportunities. And if they don't have a multitude of other opportunities, do you really want them to stay? He just ensured his most talented people will leave.

Work really long hours at high intensity....or I'll pay you $1/4 of your salary to go find another job.... Hmmm, tough decision.

The people you want are always being head hunted, always. He just said to them, "Hey, here's $40,000 to leave."

Ok, everybody....you have two choices:

1) Work your ass off for the same amount of pay you're getting now, and help my company.

or

2) Do nothing, and get the same amount of pay you're getting now....and you even choose not to do nothing, and go work for one of my competitors....and make tons more money + what my dumb ass is going to keep paying you.

He wants a young motivated work force that will do long hours. People stay until around age 30 and then move to other places within the industry. I don't know Twitter is as cool a place to work as SpaceX or Tesla to attract good people to replace the good people you're churn and burning.
