Moms for Liberty-backed school board members fire superintendent, ban critical race theory

On Tuesday evening, the Berkeley County School District in South Carolina swore in the board members who were elected last week, including six who received endorsements from the conservative activist group Moms for Liberty.

Within two hours, the school board had voted to fire the district’s first Black superintendent, terminate the district’s lawyer, ban critical race theory and set up a new committee to decide whether certain books and materials should be banned from schools.

Additionally, the board voted to replace the existing chair with Mac McQuillin, a local attorney and one of the board members backed by Moms for Liberty.

The rapid moves Tuesday in Berkeley County, the fourth largest school district in the state, showed the impact of Moms for Liberty’s focus on electing conservative school board members, and prompted uproar among some community members in attendance.

Like I looked at the people who were running for school board even though I wasn't eligible to vote in my district. Business owners? Nope. Attorneys? Nope. There was only like one actual educator in my area and she beat out the MAGA nutjob thankfully!

Just found this post--incredible and so deeply dispiriting! This is the GOP tactic they're using to ultimately privatize our public schools--all those tax dollars are just sitting there waiting for private industry to take over. Curriculum--they'll control it by using OUR money to buy compliant politicians.

At least 200 people showed up early at the Nov.29 '22 Sarasota School Bd. meeting to rally and protest the firing of our supervisor, and many more wrote/called to oppose the firing. But the new Proud Boy/Moms for Bigotry-endorsed candidates moved ahead with their plan. The Supervisor will now voluntarily resign rather than be fired--the new conservative board majority are allowing that. But who would want to work with them now?

One rumor, not verified, is that one board member has already been selected to replace the Super, and when she leaves or quits or whatever, Gov. DeathSatan will get to appoint a replacement.
