Seriously I feel like it's the most overused word in the English language at this point. The only thing that's going to be "breaking" is my monitor when I see another headline with the word "breaking" in it. I wish we could do to the word "breaking" what Lewis Black did to the CNN scroll bar.

(4,940 posts)BREAKING in the titles. It's not needed elsewhere either. Often, the subject already has three threads about it anyway.

(8,387 posts)Yeah, I don't get it either.
It's not like they are standing by watching the Hindenburg crash and waiting for further developments.
But, it is an obnoxious attention-getting device used by, well...

Meticulously researched, measured posts with un-eyecatching headlines sink like a stone, whereas the likes of "TURN ON [Channel Whatever] NOW!!!", "I CAN'T BELIEVE [whoever] JUST SAID THAT", or teases like "Let me make it [to whatever degree] clear" get loads of clicks and hover around the top of GD for hours, not least from people checking in and complaining about lack of specificity or asking WTH the OP's on about.
