Russia advances bill to criminalize 'promoting' LGBTQ relationships

The lower house of Russia’s parliament has passed the final reading of a bill that bans the promotion of “LGBT propaganda” to children, expanding on a law that was adopted in 2013.

Under the legislation, any attempt to promote homosexuality, including in movies, books or advertising, could incur a severe fine.

The bill aims to prevent Russians from promoting or “praising” homosexual relationships or gender reassignment surgery or suggesting that they are “normal.”

Putin slams ‘cancel culture’ and trans rights, calling teaching gender fluidity ‘crime against humanity’
Citizens who promote what the Duma dubs “the propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations” could be fined up to $6,600; organizations could be fined up to $82,100. Foreign nationals could be sentenced to up to 15 days and deported.

The legislation now moves to the upper chamber, which is expected to approve it, and to President Vladimir Putin, who is expected to sign it.

One was the supposed "Nazism" Putin accused Ukraine of. Basically, "Nazism" in Putin's world encompasses anything he doesn't like. It's also been couched as a religious war, with Putin's state brand of bloodthirsty Russian Orthodox "Christianity" pitched against the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

If you've ever seen Putin talk about homosexuality in recent times, it's always with a dismissive grimace of deep distaste. The West's embrace of LGBT+ rights has been framed as an aspect of "Nazism" in Putinworld, and more recently as an aspect of "Satanism".

This contrasts with Ukraine, which still has some way to go in liberalizing its laws, but where homosexuality is not illegal, and which even in the depth of war is seeking liberal reforms.

This is from July:

Putin Allies Turn Ukraine War Into Fight Against U.S. LGBTQ+ Values

Various Russian figures and allies of President Vladimir Putin have recently used the Ukraine war as an excuse to target the LGBTQ+ community.

Among them is Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of the Chechen Republic and a longtime supporter of Putin. In a message on his Telegram channel, he took aim at transgender people, saying that he does not want his "children and the children of their children to grow up in an atmosphere of satanic ideas of gender disgrace and for the sake of the economies of other states."

Well-known Russia-1 host Olga Skabeyeva has also used hateful rhetoric toward LGBTQ+ people on at least two recent occasions, according to tweets from BBC reporter Francis Scarr. On Tuesday, Scarr shared a video of Skabeyeva saying Russia will also have to "denazify" the "trans-fascists" in addition to Ukraine. Scarr posted another clip on Thursday of Skabeyeva saying Russia can ultimately win out over Western powers by waiting for the West to run out of people due to a lack of human reproduction in connection to LBGTQ+ people.

Last month, the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) wrote that while LGBTQ+ rights were bad in Russia before the war in Ukraine, the situation has only gotten worse since Putin ordered his troops to invade the country in late February. The think tank wrote that after the war began, "homophobic propaganda has been expanded from one of the supporting pillars of Russian quasi-ideology to include justification for its war of aggression."

...as with Republicans, the Russians have it way too easy when it comes to propaganda. Simply propagandize against something that doesn't happen and claim credit when it continues to not happen. I'll bet there are virtually no teachers out there (Russia or anywhere else) who would be dumb enough to propagandize children for any type of sexual relationship. No one would support them if they did. It's a non-problem.

As the article points out, this is just another attempt to distract from Putin's war.
