On Friday, legal expert Chris Geidner took to Twitter to tear apart House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) for one of the first plans he has announced once the Republican majority is officially sworn into the chamber.

"On the very first day of the new Republican-led Congress, we will read every single word of the Constitution aloud from the floor of the House something that hasn't been done in years," McCarthy had pledged. However, Geidner took issue with several aspects of this idea.
"1. Its the House youre leading, not Congress. 2. A public reading like this is performative," wrote Geidner. Furthermore, he continued, "3. Who will read the Three-Fifths Clause? 4. Who will read the 14th Amendment?"
Republicans gained fewer than ten seats in the House, after many experts had predicted a blowout wave election with potentially dozens of pickups for the GOP. Democrats maintained control of the Senate, carrying 50 seats with a 51st on the line in Georgia next month in a runoff election between Democratic Sen. Rev. Raphael Warnock and Trump-backed former football star Herschel Walker.

(9,177 posts)before the big day, and things they didnt like were left out of the reading like the 3/5th clause relative to the census. Boner also announced that each bill must reference the Constitutional provision that authorized it. That lasted about 20 minutes.
Kevin, like Trump, has never read it. If he did, he wouldnt understand it. If he understood it, he wouldnt like it.

(54,013 posts)Old school Republicans use this clause when they promoted inner-city development through "enterprise zones" -- a conservative idea that worked good enough that Democrats adopted it too.

(65,042 posts)It's in the preamble & It's in the article covering the legislature. And, the context is the same.
But, conservatives ignore it both times.

(6,072 posts)Every Republican House member reads. All R members have to be in attendance the whole time, and ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS and Fox have to carry the entire thing live, beginning to end with no commercial breaks.
Otherwise it's just some guy in an empty room pointlessly muttering into a microphone.

(35,674 posts)so how about this: every member is given 5-10 minutes to write out a paraphrase of what they heard.
Each paraphrase will be picked up an aide and posted online by Congressional district so any member of that district can see the understanding each representative has.
If this sounds juvenile and schoolmarmish, excuse me, but I am a schoolteacher. I do this (write out a paraphrase) in classes and it is quite revealing as to how deep of an understanding the listener has.

(2,173 posts)Of course the Jesus they worship carries an AK47, denies food to the poor and says all rich people are Gods chosen. Then the only amendment that matters, the shortened 2nd, right to bear arms.

(1,766 posts)He wasn't always a nice guy, you know: beating up merchants because they made him mad--over a non-violent offense. Hating on foreigners enough to call them dogs to their faces. Promoting divisiveness, even amongst families. Wanting to hurt people forever if they don't agree with him.
But, sure, they aren't like him at all.

(12,867 posts)I'm agnostic and don't subscribe to any religion.
But the core message from Jesus as I undertand it was to help the poor and the sick and to welcome the stranger.
He overturned the tables of the money changers in the temple, and did not equate wealth with virtue.
I don't hold up Jesus or anyone else as some kind of perfect being. I evaulate their ideas and their life's work to the best of my ability.
No one can pass a purity test.
Early on, Abraham Lincoln's views on the African race would be appalling today, but he grew and learned and changed his views.
The gist of my first post is that rightwing "Christians" are among the worst hypocrites on the planet, and the planned recitation of the Constitution is performative hypocrisy as well.
