My 9-year-old grandson is in the process of becoming aware of the larger world. His mom's dad is African American, her mom is mostly German. Grandson's dad, my son, is mixed eastern European and WASP. Grandson has dark skin and curly hair, and has decided to identify as Black, for which he's quite proud. He saw an ad last week for Black Friday and went to his dad very excited. "There's a day just for us!" Meaning Black people. His dad gently explained that it means something else.
