NOTE about Post: I was only on the waiting list for about a week, then they let everyone (who was currently on the waiting list) on. Frankly, I'm enjoying it. It lacks some features and is a little flaky sometimes but fully usable and enjoyable and finding a lot of those I follow on Twitter on Post. I'm also on Mastadon.

Soooo, what is Mastodon, exactly?
It's a decentralized, open-source social media platform. Anyone can launch and host their own Mastodon server and create their own community, which can connect to other Mastodon servers. Because it's open-source, anyone is allowed to freely use the program's code or even to modify it and redistribute it, so long as they follow the rules of its license.

Hive Social, founded in 2019, is available as a mobile app for Apple and as a beta on Android. It offers a chronological feed (rather than the algorithm-determined feeds of many leading apps), and it says it does not do "shadow banning" or prioritize certain accounts.
The app promises to bring back "what you used to love about social media in a new way." Some aspects of Hive like profile music hearken to a simpler time, namely the Myspace era. It's also very photo-forward, like Instagram or Tumblr.

Post
Post was founded by former Waze CEO Noam Bardin and aims, in Twitter-like fashion, to bring together news and social media.
The site is making a direct appeal to departing Twitter users, promising content moderation, the ability to write posts of any length and "a civil place to debate ideas."
"Remember when social media was fun, introduced you to big ideas and cool people, and actually made you smarter? Remember when it didn't waste your time and make you angry or sad? When you could disagree with someone without being threatened or insulted? We want to bring that back with Post," Bardin wrote in a post on the site's homepage.

(102,276 posts)But, I like the philosophy of Post and, like you was quickly offered Beta access after a day or two on the waiting list. I may never post there as anonymity is an issue for me in this world far too full of people like MAGAs, but I do like the ability to follow some who I hope will end up there and to at least vote up good postings.
We shall see, but there seems to be commitment.

(47,430 posts)a Twitter replacement. I only signed up so I could see the occasional tweet that I see posted now and then here or on Facebook. I rarely interact and never actually post anything. I really never saw what useful purpose it served, though I know many people do. For the most part, I avoid going there and will not be sad to see it gone.

(28,347 posts)I briefly checked out Mastadon, and got so confused, I just closed it up, lol.
I've heard the waitlist takes about a week for the Post.
So far I've had no known problems with Twitter. But I don't like how Elon's been handling things, nor do I like his behavior. I wonder, sometimes, if Elon isn't purposely sabotaging Twitter.
I went over to the Post because that is where Marc Elias of Democracy Docket is at.

(297,237 posts)Personally what I've seen of Mastodon I don't like because of the Black Background. It's too hard for me to see without a struggle. Sl that's out.
TY!
