Once again, I had a pleasant interaction with people. I was on my own at a small mall, and went outside to wait for my ride. A delivery man stopped in the parking lot, and got out to come to the entrance I was sitting by. He asked me about addresses, and I regretfully told him I wasn't from around here. A younger man was walking by and helped the delivery man find his way. Neither the delivery man (had an island accent) nor the English speaker attacked me, robbed me or otherwise treated me disrespectfully.
My other experience was was watching my daughter's neighbors out with their dogs. The dog owners were of different races and there was a big dog and a small dog. The neighbors both controlled their pets, while letting them greet each other without contact. I was so delighted to see such a pleasant example of good neighbors, and good humanity, I was in a good mood all day.
I wanted to share my 2 examples of what I always hope for among us Happy Thanksgiving!

(130,908 posts)I live in southern MD about 60 miles south of DC, maybe 'ex-urban,' been here about 10 years. I can't recall visiting grocery store without someone(s) asking if I'd like help getting to and from car. Maybe 'cause I'm 'senior, but various folks here are always friendly and helpful.

(3 posts)Glad you had a pleasant experience. I live in the DC have since 1977, I've never had any issues with anyone here. I went to school with a bunch of kids from Iran, all of whom stayed and are all very successful. We live in a diverse city and we all get along fine, in my daughter's neighborhood, there are people of Indian, Japanese, Black, Ukrainian, backgrounds. Amazing but they all get along, they take care of each others kids, take the kids to soccer games, have sleepovers and birthday parties. Pretty much a normal residential neighborhood. This is a nice place to live, a bit expensive, but an atmosphere of togetherness and acceptance. I play golf with my work friends, we are all retired, our make up, black, white, asian, mid eastern, all old guys who have been together now for 35 years, we changed rules of golf unlimited mulligans. Got to compensate for age! Diversity, acceptance and respect.

(5,897 posts)I've lived in the DMV since the mid 1980s and don't ever plan to leave until retirement. I remember when the crack epidemic was ravaging the city and many of us didn't want to venture downtown. Things have changed a lot, and there are still some areas that I would avoid, but I've never had a problem either. I've known some people who've been mugged or been victims of property crimes, but you'll find that anywhere and everywhere. I still love living in the DC area with all of its attractions and the vibrancy of the area.
Oh, and welcome to DU.

(2,895 posts)on the "news," especially RWNJ "news." I'm from Bakersfield originally, and really looking forward to now hearing about all the crime in "Kevin McCarthy's Bakersfield." (J/K; that will never happen.)

As much as I hate their politicians, I've been to Texas three or four times, most recently a few years ago, and Texans are some of the friendliest, nicest people I've ever met. It just baffles me how they keep electing assholes to represent them.
