(1,874 posts)right now...
as the parent of a teen girl, there is so FUCKING much stress on these kids. Even those not in the public eye. For grades. Activities. College acceptance. Instagram FOMO. All she missed due to COVID. Everyone, everywhere is demanding so much from them. It is so hard.
And as much as I try to keep an exact temperature on how she is (away at school) there have been times she has a total and complete meltdown because she has been covering and hiding her stress until it is too much.
When she was in high school - three kids committed suicide.
We need to do something. These kids are living in a pressure cooker and the stress on them is leaving a permanent mark.
Something is very very wrong.

(24,504 posts)I was a parent in this age group 15 years ago....but I am glad that my kids didn't have to deal with today's realties at 14. I hate Cruz, but he's brought a lot of this home with his national personna. I hope he he thinks about the reality he's delivered to his kids.

(7,282 posts)I blame it on Covid Shutdown and social media. combined the isolation and then she enters high school right after schools reopened, and bam. fron a straight A student to this heartbreaking, heart wrenching, gut punching, confusing tormenting situation. just can't describe the degree of heart break and sadness,. and helplessness and all the rest of it.
Thankfully for my granddaughter, she's been in treatment since October.. and it looks until past crhistmas, we don't know yet.

(5,125 posts)I've known two women who struggled with this and one of them not only recovered but went many years dealing with more and more situations that would implode most people's minds.
The other woman was doing well last time we talked and had found her stride and place.
The difference for them they said was supportive friends because their family was batshit crazy.
That and a rubber band bracelet for one. She snapped it instead of cutting. It gave her the "wake up" and her system still released the chemicals the cutting did and took her out of the altered state she got into when her thinking had her at the edge of the cliff.
I hope your granddaughter finds all she needs for healing and becomes the strong woman who results from surviving such ordeals.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The Houston Police Department sent officers to a part of River Oaks on Tuesday night where U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz is known to reside.
HPD told Eyewitness News that it responded to reports of a 14-year-old with self-inflicted stab wounds on the arms at 7:44 p.m. in the 3000 block of Ella Lee Lane, which is just off Kirby Drive.
The video above is the ABC13 Houston's 24/7 Streaming Channel.
The teen, whose gender was not disclosed, was taken to the hospital.
Police could not say whether the call involved anyone living at Cruz's family home.

(8,387 posts)He is probably concerned about his daughter.
Cutting is a behavior that doesnt depend on the politics of a home.

(5,125 posts)Lots of teen girls in impossible situations do "test cutting" and the "close attempt" relieves some kind of tension.
It still needs treatment both physical, mental and emotional to overcome.
BUT it is a huge warning sign that someone needs support instead of constant judgement.

(16,829 posts)It depends on where and how deep the cuts are.
Being a teenage girl is rough, and so is having a parent in political office.
TigressDem
(5,125 posts)AND having Cruz for a parent?
In political office or not, he sounds a bit rough on everyone around him.

(41,987 posts)Its an attempt to deal with something that feels too big to handle. Its an indicator of tremendous pain. I hope the press and people around her give her space and the care she needs to try to heal from this. That means not speculating about her parents in this case, or using it in any way.
Poor baby. Ive treated kids who cut and theyre trying so very hard to be okay. They need all the love and support they can get. From everyone.
