And Take THAT Stone Mountain*! 😄 💙 👍..... ✊**

* for the hose when don't know-

SM is the largest Granite outcrop on the world. 2/3rds of it is underground. Erosion exposed it over millions of years..

Now for the Political/Cultural stuff -

In 1915, a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, pushed for Stone Mountain to become a monument to white Southern heroes.

A gigantic bas-relief was carved into it's southern side of Confederate "Heroes" many on horseback.

The KKK announced it's reemergence by burning a cross on the top of the mountain.
😬

from Wiki

"Stone Mountain Park officially opened on April 14, 1965 – 100 years to the day after Lincoln's assassination,[6] although the park had already been in use for a few years"

Holy Shite! 😮 Wooooah, IDK that!

The carving was finally completed in 1972! Idk that either!
Holy crackers... that means ..
I actually have seen it from a distance when I visited an art student friend in Athens, GA who took me to Atlanta in 1975 !!!!! Woah, only 3 yrs after it was finished! 😮

** throws moldy peaches in that direction!

Went up in the lift to the top of the mountain with a guy screaming “white power”. I was nervous being a light skinned black women during trip. It was so hot up top I came down within 5 minutes.

Besides having to put up with that awfulness in the lift, glad you got around otherwise (hopefully) alright.

that.

I heard of Stone Mountain again a few weeks ago when a Black man from Georgia struck up a conversation and he asked if I'd ever heard of it?

I had but didn't remember anything about it.. so he told me what it was about.

Sounded just about how you're describing it. He asked me because he was talking about his departed wife and said she was from there. But she evidently had renounced that life she was brought up in.

that mountain is the ugliest ball of rock I've ever seen.

Fun Fact: The man who did the carved the images on Stone Mountain also carved Mt. Rushmore.

Hmmmm I'll have to look at photos to compare granite vs limestone. 👍

I know some geology, but not that.

All limestone is made out of old seashells or bones. It's similar to concrete. (The Alamo is an example of this. The Alamo is crumbling and is basically made of chalk)

Limestone that has undergone pressure/metamorphous is known a dolomite or marble. Marble is much harder than crumbly limestone.

However, granite is even harder than marble to work with because it's an igneous rock and originated as molten lava and magma. It contains metals such as iron.

Stone Mountain does look like Enchanted Rock. Enchanted Rock is also granite.

and aren't some (?all) stalactites are dissolving limestone in water that reforms into that shape, /or forms then up into stalagmites? Am I making sense? 😄

Wow, idk that marble could form from limestone!

Oh we have the three rock formational types here; sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous. 👍

And gneiss can come from granite.

Even marble will dissolve slowly in vinegar

Marble can be a metamorphic limestone.

We have chalk here in my neighborhood. It's full of some type of small mollusk fossil. Hubby used to collect them, but they are so full of chalk that it's disgusting and creates dust everywhere. We also have caves with stalactites and stalagmites not too far away. (20 miles)

I forgot that sandstone is also a sedimentary rock. Sand has a neutral pH.

It’s a beautiful park and an amazing geological formation. That massive confederate carving does sort of ruin it but we ignored that part and just considered it historical. The rest of the park had no other confederate connotations… afaik.

My parents wanted see the view. We stayed about 10 minutes and left. Didn’t spend a dime in their gift shop. Dad was pretty outspoken about the carving, too.
