(57,112 posts)... and like Barack Obama once said (and they hated it), "No you didn't, you had help along the way."
If it weren't for Bill Clinton, Florida Man would have gone bankrupt in the nineties and dragged his banker down with him. Bill guaranteed a billion of FM's debt.

(65,076 posts)...that Flutie got a million miles of attention off that pass against Miami, but the real accomplishment was Gerard Phelan making that catch in traffic.
Not only did he not do it by himself, his biggest moment required someone else to do something exceptional.
But, he may not be able admit that it was the catch not the throw.

(57,112 posts)... and a good franchise got a hold of him and supported him all the way. Everything happened for him after any number of entities supported and developed him. Even his high school was built on thirty year bonds that taxpayers supported and paid off.
Flutie had to avoid a rusher with a scramble and then threw it about 65 yards in the air. Phelan tracked it well, but Flutie deserves the credit.

(65,076 posts)That happens on every hail mary play.
It's almost always the catch that turns hope into success.

(639 posts)If you want to give a receiver the credit, a better example would have been Westbrook catching Kordell Stewart's Hail Mary against Michigan in 1994. Deflections and tipped balls that have to be adjusted to are more impressive. Not to mention, Stewart danced around in the pocket, but there was no real rusher he had to avoid like Flutie....he just sat back for several seconds to let the receivers run downfield.
Stewart did have to throw it about 5-10 yards further in the air though.

(65,076 posts)The great thing Phelan did though, was maintain his concentration.
That ball fell through about a half-dozen arms but he kept his focus.
Also, he played the trajectory perfectly so he snuck into the exact right spot for that ball to fall to him.
Like catching a punt where others can faceguard without penalty.
It's definitely a memorable play. But, as a Bears fan that saw Flutie play for my team, I never thought much of him. The CFL was the perfect landing spot for him. He was excellent up north.

In concert with their very wealthy backers and other fascists around the globe to destroy democracy.

(999 posts)Flutie was drafted by the Generals in 1985. So he was Waljers teammate until the league folded. Trump was always collecting athletes as trophies so this doesn't surprise me.

(26,549 posts)seating and I didnt. When I boarded the plane she was sitting next to Doug Flutie. As I walked by she said shed see me in Orlando. Doug asked if we were together and she told him we were. He stood up insisting that I take his seat. Even though I declined he moved to the aisle and proceeded to the rear of the plane.
Hard to get a hate on for the guy!

(1,495 posts)I still have several boxes of Flutie Flakes (from 1998) in my storage room. He always seemed like such a nice person.
The Buffalo Bills did him dirty though, and now we have to deal with the Flutie Curse.
