I have been a member and daily reader of Democratic Underground and rarely posted much. It is a fantastic website for Democrats, progressives and liberals. That is what I have loved on this board, the inclusion of many groups that I respect. But I cannot help but shake my head at times as to the direction this board has taken. Something as important as remembering the tragedy of Pearl Harbor on the day it occurred, December 7, 1941, should receive more attention. Perhaps it's just me but I feel that be it our grandfathers or great grandfathers that fought and died for us in WW II deserve better.
I understand this tragedy did not occur during many of our lifetimes but it should still not be mostly ignored. To put it bluntly, how many here would be upset if eighty one years later 9/11 was forgotten? I see many posts here regarding the anti fa movement, who do you people think were the original anti fascists? Oh I dint know, the guys that fought Hitler and Mussolini?
Pardon my rant, this day in history though deserves remembrance.

(22,357 posts)By whom and why?
ETA: I'm admittedly being a dick about this because "deserve" is such an odd concept to me.

(1,996 posts)By whom? All Americans, it was an American tragedy. Why? Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack killing over 2400 people (sailors/citizens)
Deserve to me basically means earned. So yes, I do believe those that died that day deserve our respect.

(964 posts)pro-nazi americans were able to stop our participation in the war. The veterans I knew from WW2 were mostly republicans. They gave and deserved respect... so do the fallen from December 7th
Times have changed. Thank you for your post

(47,131 posts)A day of infamy gave Americans a terrible resolve to defeat Berlin and Tokyo.
Nightwing, my (US Navy) uncle was killed in the Battle of Guadalcanal.
My Dad was USAF and flew combat in the Burma Hump.
Both were in harm's way and one made it, one did not.
I think about them frequently and the huge sacrifices their generation made.
The battle conditions are unimaginable to most present day Americans.
I thank God they are not here now to see the rise of fascism and Hitler worship on US soil.

(1,996 posts)I had a few uncles that fought and fortunately survived. My father was younger and missed WW II, he always felt it was a blessing. Like you though, I am glad my father and Uncles aren't around to see the rise if fascism today in our nation.

(47,131 posts)People today do not understand what they went through.
I have an uncle who was younger and still in flight training when the war ended.
So he lucked out. I am glad your dad was spared too.

(5,229 posts)In my family it was so important. My father and father in law both left infants to serve in the conflict. Their wives had to go it alone, not knowing when their spouses would return or if. I never saw my dad til I was three. It must have been a very scary time for those left behind. Today's military have the luxury of almost constant communication and video chatting. Their children can see and talk to them. That's a wonderful improvement!
