Especially from members whose state voted for Trump in 2020 and elected a MAGA Senator in 2022.

(7,432 posts)The ONLY reasons to vote for Walker are all tied to racism. That's roughly half of all Georgia voters. They cynically mocked the entire election process by voting for a know-nothing, do-nothing, ignorant, likely brain-damaged candidate whose only strength was his token blackness and his Trump connections. Republicans wanted Walker as a statement: to own the libs. They all knew he was summarily unqualified to be Senator, and that was why they wanted to vote for him. They would rather dishonor the office of Senator than run and vote for a qualified candidate. And they wanted Walker in the Senate chamber to mock him as a "typical black man." This was racial hatred at its core.

(36,312 posts)A little more then half of adults in Georgia did vote in the runoff. If one defines a racist in Georgia as someone who voted for Walker, then about 25% of the adult population is racist.

(22,582 posts)We can't elect a Black man to the Senate, but while Ron Johnson has been in office we have elected and reelected an openly gay woman, Tammy Baldwin, to the Senate. So racism is greater than LGBTQ prejudice here.
Also, in a similarity to GA, 48,000 more people voted for Tony Evers than voted for Mandela Barnes and he lost by just under 27,000 votes.
My congressional district (gerrymandered), held by a Democrat for 26 years who chose to "retire" was won by an election denier and insurrectionist who was in D.C. on Jan. 6 and trespassing at the Capitol.

(22,582 posts)received more votes than Trump's margin of victory and I'd reckon those votes didn't come from the right.
In GA there were certainly many thousands of Republicans who voted for Walker, believed he was not qualified to be a senator, but wanted that seat in the Republican column. They understand that American politics is binary, it's either the Democratic or Republican candidate who will prevail. They want it to be the Republican. In 50 years of voting I've always voted for the Democratic candidate because even if I didn't agree with that person they still counted towards the Democrats controlling whatever body they were elected to serve. But I've never had to vote for any Democratic candidate here in WI who was remotely as bad as Walker.

(28,820 posts)When Wisconsin went all Scott Walker We were always told we got what we deserved etc. Now that its happening everywhere, not so much.
Wisconsin has just as many racists as any place. But not the majority. We have drunk divers on their 7th DUI. Rednecks participating in plots to kidnap Whitmer.
That doesnt mean we are all that way.

(102,292 posts)(especially now) of change in GA. I am so heartened by the changes I am seeing now. Hell, even Gingrich's old stomping grounds in Cobb CO have turned decisively blue. Cherokee CO is another story, but as it remains a "bedroom community" to Atlanta, surely growth will put a strain on its demographics as well. Gwinnett has shown tremendous change as it has burst with growth as well.
Change is good. I returned to help turn CO blue decades ago and it has largely (but not fully succeeded. GA's turn to purple is phenomenal and far more quickly than anticipated. There are racist areas with white nationalist groups in some areas of Colorado (see the SPLC's excellent database)--as there similarly are in Idaho and Montana and at least some presence in all the states--even California. That GA and most of the South have to outlive its history before some attitudes change is undoubtedly true, but speaking of my own state of Colorado, we have a long way to go as well. Never a slave state, but boy did the KKK have influence here in decades past, and the horrific treatment of Native Americans continues to haunt. To wit, the renaming efforts that lauded racist politicos or disparaged Native Americans and others have picked up steam. No state is immune from this. Those who think otherwise are not looking closely enough and/or do not know their own history.

EVEN in a heavily gerrymandered state, Georgia did a GREAT JOB of GOTV and WINNING this for the DEMS and America.
WE HAVE to STOP the election interference because when more people vote DEMS win.

(32,712 posts)Unfortunately, every state has its share of institutional racism and everyday racism. I think Georgia is a little different due to the racial diversity throughout the state. Whites are only 50% of the population. Most Georgians are not able to completely disconnect and we all work side by side for the most part, so that creates a little more empathy than what might be found in other states.
I think the main thing holding us back from taking over the state entirely is gerrymandering. The only other issue would be hesitancy from some small business owners, many of whom are people of color (over 20%). Georgia is tied in 5th place with Illinois for the states with the most small businesses. Universal healthcare would go a long way in allowing businesses to thrive without having to worry about employee healthcare costs. Also, every state and industry is different so you can't go around setting arbitrary minimum wage amounts, which is why even senator Warnock said no to the $15 minimum wage idea. Just my opinion.

(34,111 posts)I live in Kansas and I cannot even tell you how many times I have been told to leave the state to move to "somewhere good". Fuck them, just ignore them. They might not really mean harm but they certainly do not mean good for you or your state OR the country. It is BS, nobody lives in Purityville and most of us don't want to. Just ignore it, it will never stop unless you can somehow get all of the people in Georgia be like those DUers. Georgia needs you as Kansas needs me and all the Kansas DU people.

(53,961 posts)It usually focuses on the South, but we can see it in regard to "the flyover states", as in, they are of no consequence, the latte liberal elites, usually the Northeast, especially New York, and the "earthy-crunchy crowd" of the Pacific Northwest. There is a bit of an elitist attitude toward those of us from the South or living in the South, especially when the discussion of ancestry comes into play. I mean, we all know, there was no racism in the North back in the day.
Regionalism is also international with the most popular target of the left being Israel in a negative way, but it is also rampant in the "paternalistic bigotry" when discussion Middle East countries, except Israel, and many African nations. The right is highly regionalist when it comes to Iran, China, Russia (sometimes), Venezuela, and the Middle East countries, except Israel, in most cases.
It is simply another form of bigotry that some use to disparage the people of those places.
