New Mexico city passes anti-abortion ordinance, calls itself 'sanctuary city for the unborn'

New Mexico city passes anti-abortion ordinance, calls itself ‘sanctuary city for the unborn’

The City of Hobbs, New Mexico Monday passed an ordinance to prevent abortion providers from being granted business licenses or operating in the city in any capacity. At the state level, abortion is legal in New Mexico. The ordinance passed 7-0 and requires businesses to follow federal laws like 18 U.S.C § 1461, which bans mailing any item that can “be used or applied for producing abortion.”

Generally, this provision is considered unenforceable, but Hobbs is not alone in trying to ban abortion through section 1461. So-called “sanctuary cities for the unborn” aim to take advantage of the recent overturning of Roe v Wade in order to criminalize abortion within their borders.

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) condemned the vote and referenced the out-of-state activists who petitioned for the law. She stated:

Tonight the Hobbs City Commission approved an anti-abortion resolution authored by out-of-state extremists seeking to criminalize essential reproductive health care. This is an affront to the rights & personal autonomy of every woman in New Mexico, and we will not stand for it… Providers delivering health care have every right to establish a practice, and all women have the right to access abortion services – no matter where in New Mexico they call home.

Even when I was very young I recognized it as an ugly place that really needed what I would later come to know was "zoning." I swear that experience was part of the reason I became a raving liberal. Including beauty in public places is essential (I grew up near San Francisco, and I knew a pretty city when I saw one). So Hobbs and Ronald Reagan turned me leftward.

Not that I had plans to go there. Kind of sad. A.whole bunch of my family lived in Clayton. All my grandmother's people. Big oil and cattle ranchers. You would think racist but my uncle's girlfriend of 40 years was Native American. They never married but they had houses practically next door to each other. Everybody in Clayton knew and no one seened to care.

Of course, Texas is also an "unborn sanctuary state".

At least the residents of Hobbs can just go to another town. In Texas, the closest border is LA and is 300 plus miles away. Ooops, that won't work. LA is another Texas. I could try OK, close to 400 miles away. Well, OK is another Texas. Ah, New Mexico is 540 miles away.

Kinda doubt that they're large enough to support a Planned Parenthood etc.

OB/Gyns in private practice are licensed by the state and wouldn't be subjected to this local ordinance.
