Deputies, Fire Notified of Vehicle Over the Side Via iPhone Emergency Satellite Service
This afternoon at approximately 1:55 PM,

Rescue 5 was able to locate the victims and insert a paramedic. The paramedic learned the patients, a male and female in their 20s, had mild to moderate injuries. The helicopter was able to hoist the victims out of the canyon and transport them to a local area hospital.

I gave up my ROLEX(!) and bought an Apple Watch because I saw where it saved the lives of 2 people in a situation I once had. And it does so much more since I brought it.
Every one should have it or similar, esp. if over 55.

While the technology is impressive and useful, cell phone marketing and upselling is a scandal worthy of a Congressional investigation. The pricing reminds me of my Mom's experiences shopping for a new car.

The people that had this accident did not have cell service after the phone detected a crash. The phone notified them to point the phone at a satellite. The phone did the rest.
I was awakened one night when my watch was vibrating because my heart rate had dropped into the low 40's and the phone was counting down before it called the 911 system. But all the racket woke me up and I was able to cancel the call.
Since my PSAP has been upgraded to text calls, the phone would have sent my medical information and location. Before the ambulance rolled they would have known that it was a heart related call. As a side note, due to my county being in the smart911 system, they would have known about my dog and his name, and my cat and that they are overly affectionate.
As an old fart (almost 75) I am loving the new tech.

(7,905 posts)I mostly drive around on paved roads not so far from neighbors. My phone needs are modest: text, voice, and a keypad are enough. I rarely make more than 10 calls a month anyway.
I realize that the higher featured phones have a place and an audience who can afford them.
My objection is that I don't want all that in my phone. I have a good tablet to do all that with, or my laptop. I also don't want the possibility of invasive software tracking my every move and banking transaction.

(15,719 posts)I like being at the doctors office and they give me an appointment and I type it in and it is on my computer at home. It reminds me on y watch. Being 75, I need all the help I can get being reminded about crap. I would guess 95% of the contacts in my contacts list are all doctors and clinics.
I stayed with the apple ecosystem because I want the security of it. If I was in my 20's or 30's I would probably be Samsung and not care what they put on it.
It has really given me a sense of security and makes me not feel my age.

(7,905 posts)I just want a simple phone at a reasonable price for the device and the service. Something which it appears has all but evaporated.
I'm an ex-mechanic and resent spending more for a phone and service plan than my last 4 cars cost.

I plan on buying an Apple Watch 8 next year when social security goes up. I am at the point where I could use the SPo2 a lot. Apple refurbed has good prices on them and I can get a 2 year warranty on it that will cover a new battery if I need it.

(4,616 posts)You can buy them on AMAZON. I ride in the mountains. A LOT! Where you may not see a car for hours, is very remote and 99% of the time no cell service. But stunningly beautiful. I carry a SAT communicator at all times. It communicates via text and email not voice. The device was a couple hundred bucks with a small monthly subscription. Like a pre paid cell, $25, $35 and higher, you choose. It has been used once. And it was a life saver.

If you buy a PLB, youll be required to register it (free of charge) in the NOAA SARSAT (Search and Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking) database. Your PLB units distress signal is then associated with vital personal information (like name, address, emergency contact phone numbers and medical conditions) that can help speed the response time for your rescuers. Note that you also need to update your data every two years and, if you ever sell or transfer ownership of your PLB, you must report that in this database and the next user is then required to register their personal data.

Additionally, and for many years, of course, any mobile device has been designed to be linked with a tracker, which of which also might exist in many vehicles and can be used to remote disable those vehicles.
This rescue sits in a much larger context of tracking humans, not just saving them.

(15,719 posts)quite a while.
In fact, they were the first category of satellites to carry SAR instrument payloads when the idea of Search and Rescue Satellite- Assisted tracking (SARSAT) was implemented back in the early 1980s.
All satellites regardless of their country of origin, can download distress alerts to all partnered LUTs anywhere in the world within range of their signal. There are three types of satellites in the Cospas-Sarsat system Low-Earth Orbiting Search and Rescue (LEOSAR) satellites; Geostationary Orbiting Search and Rescue (GEOSAR) Satellites; and Medium-Altitude Earth Orbiting Search and Rescue (MEOSAR) Satellites. These satellites perform other tasks including weather and climate monitoring, communications, and navigation.
