General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIn their delusional propaganda bubble, Trump voters believe someone can replace Trump.
Many Trump voters are now saying we don't need Trump. We still like what he did but we don't need him. Desantis can do what Trump did. It doesn't work that way. They are fooling themselves as they always do.
Trump is a freak of nature. His victory in 2016 was a freak event. So many freakish, strange events lined up perfectly for Trump to win in 2016. Every election since then he got his ass kicked.
Desantis and others will attempt to act like Trump. They will move far right trying to get the crazy Trumps voters to support them. This will backfire in the general election. Most Americans want the Republican Party to moderate. They are tired of the loony shit coming from the Republican Party.
The Trump voters also don't understand that over the next two years they are going to have to face reality, which will be something to behold. They are going to watch people they supported get indicted, go on trial for attempting to over throw the United States of America.
This is what happens to people who use the internet and cable news in a way that dumbs themselves down to imbecile levels.

(11,478 posts)had a lot to do with the rudimentary appeal of the 'strongman' 'authoritarian' figure to many. That is kind of a tribal thing - naturally exacerbated by the polarization that we have been ginning up for at least a generation or so in this country - and (IMO) it is not going to go away with DJT fading into the wings. I think you are unfortunately wrong. At this point in time 'owning the libs' is quite sufficient motivation to propel another slash and burn authoritarian to the fore. And the 'crazies' that you quote - are telling you just exactly that.

(14,610 posts)As someone on the upside of 50, my entire adult life Republicans have infantile, impetuous partsian lunatics.
From spending Bill Clinton's entire presidency looking for a reason to take him down, including literally investigating the family cat's fan mail, before stumbling into a blue dress.
They spent the 90s saying his concern about islamic extremists terrorists was an attempt to distract the country from their trumped up scandals about him, they were virulently against his intervention into Kosavo, cause WE SHOULD NOT BE NATION BUIDLING, despite his managing to do it without one lost American life.
Then after the idiot POTUS was asleep at the wheel on 9-11, they made islamic extremists the sole focus of the country's attention before saying of us who opposed their actual attempt to nation build in Iraq as America hating terrorist lovers, then getting him reelected because he kept them safe.
The country gave them an ever so brief time out for the Iraq disaster and their party blowing up the economy before eagerly sweeping the lunatic "tea party" crews into congress in the biggest mid term win in our lives cause of the gravest assault on democracy in our history - the dems passing THEIR GD VERSON OF HEALTH CARE REFORM.
The R senate actually wrote a letter to Iran trying to torpedo BHOs Iran nuclear deal, no one gave a shit.
I told people 45 was no joke coming down the elevator because he embodied what their party had become, and he was true threat to win the nomination, which he did easily, and if he did, this country was absolutely stupid enough to make him POTUS.
He has helped lower the bar for political and civil discourse in this country that we will never get our norms back, the entire party has followed suit in his mindset of just keep saying and doing as much horrible shit as you can, because it wears people down and they can't keep up with it.
More to the point ... While I still feel he will win in the primary if has not been charged and or prosecuted or has a major health issue, Desantiis or whoever will will be a HEAVY favorite in the general because the fringy parts of the party that really was not comfortable with him will eagerly get behind him because by the standards that now exist, he will look normal - a mean, truly hateful and corrupt POS, but just by not going on social media acting like a child, they will say he is the best thing ever.

You may be right that a trumpy gopr may not be the next president but it will take a herculean effort AGAIN to prevent it.

(1,968 posts)I think trump just killed a lot of the movement you think is happening. I just saw a thread on here from freepers, they pretty much seen enough of him. That super hero stunt I think was the final straw.

(8,412 posts). . . And if you think that what we've come to know as "Trumpism" is dependent upon TFG, you are sadly deluded. Those who supported Trump will gladly support anyone who reinforces their worst bigotries and instincts. Their willingness to dump Trump only shows how mercenary they are in pursuing their agenda.
Also, I think it's extremely unwise to consider the 2022 elections an "ass kicking." Need I remind you that Republicans took the House? True, Democrats did better than expected -- much better, in fact. But it was hardly an "ass kickiing." Many of the races in which Democrats prevailed came down to the slimmest of margins. The implicit suggestion that we can afford to just relax is positively dangerous!
