My mom the MAGA!

I have posted here about how I am caring for my mother who has liver cancer. She has been a religious fanatic my entire life and spent her entire life waiting for Revelations to happen. Now she is sick with terminal cancer and if she lives six months it will be a shock to everyone, especially her doctors at City of Hope.

My mom is the sweetest kindest person you could ever meet. There has never been anyone who doesn’t meet her and fall in love with her sweet charming ways.

But underneath all that sweet, kind and loving persona there has always been a cognitive dissonance caused by her extreme Catholicism. Case in point: up until recently she complained about the current pope because he’s too liberal in her view. How dare he talk about not judging gays. How dare he not talk about going to hell! We were all brought up in such an extremely religious environment that when I say I am a recovering Catholic, I REALLY REALLY mean it.

Well mom fell in love with Trump from the second he said President Obama was not a citizen. She believed Michelle Obama was a closeted transgender man named Michael. She believes Nancy Pelosi is a witch who should be burned at the stake. (Not literally but you get the picture)!!

She has been a Trumper for 7 years! Until yesterday!!! Something came up with my husband about Trump and his MAGA-cards and mom made a disapproving face. I looked at her and said, “Mom! That’s YOUR GUY! You voted for him TWICE!” And she said, “Well people change their minds!”

I was in shock!!! I asked her what will she do if she makes it to the next election. Surprise surprise … NOT! She is now in love with DeSantis! But of course she is! 🤦🏽‍♀️

I normally don’t engage but I had to know! Whyyyy!!! She said he practices what he preaches! To which I responded: don’t forget the Germans voted for Hitler and he practiced what he preached to the point of murder!

My poor mom! I think she lost sleep over that comment!

Mom has always been a racist. Not a mean one. Like she’s never mean or rude to anyone. But her worst nightmare when I was growing up would be if I married a Mexican or a Black!!! And we are Costa Rican!!! If I brought a blonde haired blue eyed boy around it was her dream come true.

Such a strange character my sweet mama. Such conflicting beliefs. How she and my dad ever got together I cannot understand. He’s as liberal as they come and his mom was an ardent socialist activist who even got herself arrested back in the day in CR!

8. I have a couple aunts who stopped speaking to me (no big loss) because I challanged them on Trump's

appeal to them. They are devout Xians and devout Republicans. When I asked what aspect of Trump's life they felt most reflects their beliefs, I got crickets. I actually went a little passive aggressive with some quotes from the bible. The next day, one of them blocked me on Facebook (oh noes!11!) and the other one won't even look at me at family reunions. Oh well.

This was in 2015. Can't say I'm all that concerned that I don't talk to them anymore.

15. How are they different?

One had zero compunction about denying health care to a foreign woman and her child and calling the mother a dog to her face. He relented in granting the care only when Mom sucked up to him enough.

The other one does the same thing.

One brags about how he'll divide even families if they don't love him.

And so does the other one.

One has a freakish obsession with torturing people forever if they don't agree with him.

And so does the other one.

So how are they different?

4. My heart goes out to you and your family.

I hold you in my heart as you go through this time together. My mother and sister are also MAGA supporters. My sister recently said she knows T#$&@ has no chance of winning. She followed it up with..I like DeSantis. Did not skip a beat. She is completely unaware that her picker is broken. I’m supposed to see them on Christmas Day and am really hoping that we can make it through the visit without trauma. I am in awe of you for keeping a balance of loving care and the MAGA mentality. If I feel things going off kilter Sunday I will bring you and your fine balance of life’s bigger issues to mind and find grace in getting through the day. Thank you for sharing.

7. I'm lucky. Not even one asshole in my immediate family.

I have one uncle who is constantly on Fox. But he is not a zealot about it.

One cousin, got 2 Rona vaccines and one booster. She refuses to get another booster because she doesn't want the gub'mint telling her what to do.

Another cousin spent a few days in hospital. But it could'a been worse if she hadn't taken ivermectin.

But I don't have much contact with the three of em.

That says it all. I am leaving money to the Freedom From Religion Foundation since, like Ron Reagan Jr, I am not afraid of burning in Hell. The true groomers in society are the catholic priests. I mean, look at them. They bring the children up, dress them in robes and then have them hold the challis etc for the priest during the mass. See that child labor! Then after mass, they get to watch them undress. I'm telling you, groomers. It's a disgusting practice and my mind is tortured that they not only covered up the pedo priests, they transferred them to other parishes to groom some more. That whole religion should be disbanded and removed from society. I didn't even mention what they did to the nuns and women that wanted to be leaders. That is one sick religion.

17. I wasn't raised Catholic

I hadn't even HEARD of the Catholic church until after I was an atheist. There was no Catholic church within 50 miles of where I spent most of my childhood in Podunkistan.

My atheism came from my mother sending me to a Protestant religious school, where they were stupid enough to require us to read the big book of bad ideas in its entirety over the course of a year.

Getting a gander at that obscenity was all it took to turn me off the religion forever, and none of the other ones withstood close scrutiny, either. I'm sorta okay with some Buddhist concepts, but that cosmic justice system thing didn't pass the smell test. And that bit about women not being complete beings unless they get reincarnated as a man didn't help.

So I decided to go with reality. At least that wouldn't dictate that I be okay with putting people in an eternal torture chamber for disagreeing with me. Or that I be considered barely human, just for being a woman.
