she has been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.
I'm sorry for her, if this is true, but I'm not surprised. I'm equally surprised she hasn't been diagnosed with heart disease, but this could happen later.
I hope she'll consider developing and promoting recipes that aren't as devastating to the liver, pancreas, heart, etc as the fried, cream-laden, butter-laden sugary courses that I've seen her prepare in years past. I stopped watching her show many years ago because the food is so unhealthy.
I truly hope she can regain her good health.

(12,287 posts)I saw Anthony Bourdian (sp) saying she was using way too much butter and pork. (He did make a joke that since she worked for Smithfield it was expected)

(45,358 posts)Butter is fine, in moderation.

(16,207 posts)amend their behavior, hm? I might also add that Bourdain is a French chef. Of course, there is no butter/cream/meat or anything else that's highly caloric in that cuisine, either.

(12,287 posts)but very little FRYING which is the major no-no.
Missy Vixen
(16,207 posts)but there's certainly baking. There's also a significant amount of butter/cream in French recipes, too.
I'm dating myself, but Julia Child sure as hell didn't shy away from the butter. She lived to be in her 90's. She smoked, too.
I don't think that Paula Deen is the Satan some on this thread believe she is. I enjoy her program. We also enjoy her barbecue meatloaf. ONCE IN AWHILE.

Oh, the humanity!
So, "eating" is now a vice? Thanks for updating me.

Both eat a lot of crap also. I'm surprised they haven't shared their health issues also. I would be very surprised if they didn't have issues.

(45,358 posts)I'm a pretty good chef myself, I use butter and fat and I'm thin. I just make sure I don't eat more than 2500 calories per day. Simple.

(30,540 posts)him, both him and the food are disgusting. Seems like he's on continually hour after hour.

(21,675 posts)it's not just what he eats, it's the vast quantities of food that's going to have him headed down diabetes highway, if not already. portion control is extremely important too.

(22,239 posts)Since my heart attack in October, my two favorite things bacon and creamy potato-leek soup were hard to give up.
Fortunately blood pressure wasn't an issue, so I don't have to use that vile Mrs. Dash.
Ilsa
(61,695 posts)eliminating bacon content, except for maybe a teaspoon of bacon fond, provided a healthier option with a fair amount of flavor. I don't even do that any more now, though. I just don't miss it any more.
Good luck with your modifications. I'd love to see you around DU for many years!

(27,445 posts)was a brunch she was making for friends. One of the dishes was a hamburger with all the calorie laden trimmings. Instead of using a bun, it was served between two glazed donuts.
Then there was the show where these two shirtless hunky guys brought out a slap of butter that must have weighed 500 lbs.
Lots of people with type 2 diabetes can control it with exercise and diet but it takes willpower and commitment. I wish her well and hopefully she can use her fame to educate people on how to prepare delicious meals without using a pound of butter.

(30,540 posts)biscuits that come in the tube and deep fried them. I had never seen her show before and I couldn't believe it. I got to admit they looked good but still I wasn't about to eat something like that, no way!

But there are markers to watch to help avoid non-genetic Type2 Diabetes. Schools in Texas, CA, NM, and AZ are screening students for precursors of the disease. It starts with looking for hyperkeratosis on the back of the neck (or in other places). The hyperkeratosis indicates hyperinsulemia. If present, weight and blood pressure are recorded. Referrals are made to the pediatrician if a student is positive and their BMI or BP is elevated. Intervention with diet and exercise have proven to be instrumental in helping those students avoid developing Type 2. Theyve seen results. For more information, contact Pan American University in Brownsville TX.
On edit: the nurses see this with the body types where the student (or adult) has a larger abdominal girth.

(30,947 posts)My grandmother, my aunts, uncles and my mother all developed it in later years. A few years ago, my doctor said I was pre-diabetic. My sister who is 62 was diagnosed with it last year. So in my case it genetic. I am fighting it off. I am 73, but I am a vegetarian and stay away from fatty foods. Though I do have a sweet tooth, I have discovered sugar-free ice cream and sugar-free Smucker's Fudge Syrup, so I can indulge my sweet tooth without guilt.

(86 posts)I say this seriously, after doing much reading of some very good books and articles, it is not the butter and "grease" that is the problem - it is the white flour and sugar that she uses in just about everything. This includes not only desserts, but oodles of noodle dishes and potatoes, etc. These are the real culprits - carbohydrates!
Ilsa
(61,695 posts)butter, etc in excessive amounts can certainly contribute to other chronic health issues such as coronary artery disease, gall bladder problems, intestinal problems, etc.
Mopar151
(9,983 posts)AKA diabetes education classes. Carbohydrates are necessary for brain function, and many other useful things. Portion control and balance are MUCH more important.
Ilsa
(61,695 posts)It IS about moderation, portion control, etc. I haven't seen anyone advocating for completely eliminating any one item. A diet needs to be balanced so the body (including brain) gets the nutrition it needs.
