(1,670 posts)Republican and criminal, OK.
Republican and racist, OK.
Republican and gay, let's find out.
In general we say "It's OK if you're a Republican," but that misses the point. It's not that it's OK, it's that those rules apply to "others." If you're a Republican and do those things it's not hypocrisy, because that's how other people are supposed to behave. Kind of like the old "Christians aren't perfect, just forgiven," bumper stickers. It was almost an admission that they didn't feel required to make an effort.

(22,670 posts)If the guy was a democrat, other democrats would be hounding him to be expelled and Fox Noise would be beating the drum 24/7. But alas, democrats don't have such lying candidates, just boring ethical public servants.
So, I predict the Rs turn his embarrassment into a crowning achievement. It's right out of their playbook; elevate the least worthy to higher positions. Remember U.S. national security advisor Condoleezza Rice on 9/10/2001? In 2005, Republican president G.W. Bush promoted her to Secretary of State! I suppose she was just too brilliant of a mind to waste her talents protecting America from terrorism, it was imperative to promote her.

(35,685 posts)has to do with promoting incompetents. Been around for a long time. Ahh, I just remembered:
The Peter principle is a concept in management developed by Laurence J. Peter, which observes that people in a hierarchy tend to rise to "a level of respective incompetence": employees are promoted based on their success in previous jobs until they reach a level at which they are no longer competent, as skills in one job do not necessarily translate to another.

We must admit, Santos is a masterful liar. Actually a bit too good for the job of potential republican congressman. Should be a fantasy writer.
At any rate, per george bush, jr., Santos is just making the pie higher.
Good read and comment.

(17,379 posts)Powell v. McCormack limited the ability of Congress to refuse to seat a duly elected member unless they violated the Qualifications of Members Clause.
The House could expel him after he was seated for reasons beyond the one's that would allow them not to seat him. However, they would need a 2/3 vote (not going to happen) and historically, the House has only expelled members for actions taken during the Congress in which the expulsion vote occurs, not for things done before the member was elected.

(5,164 posts)There are so many lies its hard to believe.
In December 2022, Santos told the New York Post: "I never claimed to be Jewish ... I am Catholic. Because I learned my maternal family had a Jewish background I said I was 'Jew-ish'."[3] In fact, in a campaign position paper sent to Jewish groups, Santos said he was " a proud American Jew" and claimed he had been to Israel multiple times.[11]

(838 posts)...of the true damage trump has done.
Santos said he graduated NYU and Baruch - he holds NO advanced degree from any higher learning institution.
Santos said he worked for Citigroup and Goldman Sachs - there is no record of him ever working for either company.
Santos said he considers himself Jewish - he ain't.
He has ADMITTED he lied about all of this. His attitude is "So what? It's just 'resume embellishment."
And there's no legal mechanism to stop him from taking office. None.

(10,832 posts)Winning is everything and the end justifies the means.
Fictionalizing a resume? Fraud? Making stuff up on the fly?
If the Orange Mob Boss (who Santos reportedly loves) can do it, why can't an aspirational House member do it and do it well enough that he wins what was considered a Democratic seat?
Although the New York State Dems have a lot to answer for in ignoring Santos' fraudulent/ serial lying run, I think the the national Democrats are quite right in spotlighting the man's unfitness for office because from what I've read the GOP knew who and what the man was and is.
They. Did. Not. Care.
George Santos is a poster boy for how Republicans operate. I'd like to see the Dems use barbed ridicule in this case, continuously reminding the public that Santos is an ugly joke and that the electorate has been played for suckers. Again.
Wake Up, America!
