Politico: The political isolation of the worlds largest money managers is a window into how the GOPs recent pivot to populism on Big Business can paralyze industry lobbying efforts. Its also forcing companies to rethink how they message environmental and social goals, even if theyre aimed at satisfying customers, investors and employees.
A growing list of major companies not just limited to finance are facing ire from Republican officials at the state and federal levels for their stances on climate and issues such as race, voting rights and guns.

(15,384 posts)Businesses making decisions to make money based on younger people's beliefs and values in order to keep them as customers for as long as possible. I've never heard of that concept.

(65,075 posts)Big companies will do whatever is in their best interest, and most lobbying efforts don't actually get things done, they just get them done sooner. Big companies might want the shorter time-line but can live without it. If there is more value in the good PR with customers, investors & other stakeholders than a legislative change, they'll take the former every time.
Second, these blowhards in congress making this noise are NOT going to turn down lobbying dollars, and if the choice was take the money or harass these companies, they're taking the money & shutting up.
Third, a great percentage of companies with over a billion in revenue did not benefit much from dereguulation. I know the chemical industry and relaxing EPA rules at the federal level meant nothing to most of it.
Environmental protection systems are already a sunk cost, the operation of them carries a tiny marginal cost, and in many places lobbied away regs didn't change state laws or Responsible Care guidelines. So, regs got relaxed and they changed nothing.
I don't accept the article's conclusion, and I think that this will amount to nothing more than media noise.

(118,682 posts)be cut out of selling energy every middle class person uses right now. Putin sees climate change as a good thing he has said. These threats to big business are so they fall in line to big oil. It is in business interest to be anti racist and have more customers with money to spend. Racism is a tool that right wingers gain power through. They are being "whipped" into line.
