(Salon) Right-wing anti-vaxxers pushed a debunked conspiracy blaming COVID shots after NFL player Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field on Monday.

Hamlin, a 24-year-old safety for the Buffalo Bills, suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed on the field after a scary hit to his chest during the Monday Night Football matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. Players surrounded Hamlin as he received CPR for about nine minutes before being taken off the field in an ambulance. The game was postponed and Hamlin was taken to a local hospital.

"Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest following a hit in the Buffalo Bills' game versus the Cincinnati Bengals. His heartbeat was restored on the field and he was transferred to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for further testing and treatment. He is currently sedated and listed in critical condition," the Bills said in a statement early Tuesday.

"Prior to 2021, Athletes collapsing on the field was NOT a normal event. This is becoming an undeniable (and extremely concerning) pattern," insisted Lauren Witzke, a conservative commentator and failed Delaware GOP Senate candidate.

"I know what everyone with any common sense is thinking. This isn't the first time a pro athlete had this happen," wrote right-wing commentator Grant Stinchfield, blaming the "NFL mandate" even though the NFL currently has no vaccine requirement for players. ......................(more)

Not very common, but happens most often to high school football players. I don't do sports physicals anymore, but when I did, I always ordered an EKG for any kid going out for basketball or football. Sometimes the parent would decline it, and I would refuse to sign off on the patient. That upset more than a few parents, who thought a sports physical was little more than a rubber stamp to let their kids play school sports. Not with me, it wasn't.

While playing in a high school softball game. It was almost instantaneous. She was 15. She'd be almost 30 now if she had survived.

Guy looked like a Greek God. Number One in President's Physical Fitness score for the whole school. He'd take his shirt off in PE class and everyone would just stop and stare. Very cool person, too. The last person you would expect to just keel over one day.

I wonder whether, or not, caffeine may have played a roll.
Powdered caffeine is very dangerous & the FDA has even put out warnings about it.

However, it is legal & I’ve read that lots of NFL players use it.

convenience store kids must be drinking a lot more caffeine than they used to. Those drinks were not around when I was a kid.

But I also remember hearing about kids dropping over during sports several times over the years
