Yes, there was the "putting best face on it" resignation over ethics problems, but the main reason was that he would have been ousted as speaker by his own party.

The main reason for that was his lack of results on one critical issue: The Salome Caucus wanted the head of Bill the Clinton handed to them on a plate, and Newt failed to deliver.

If Clinton had gone down, he'd have been untouchable and his lack of ethics would have been overlooked (just as it had been previously).

The Republicans have had this dynamic going on for a very long time.
