I don't recall the name of the movie and I don't remember the plot, but one scene made

a lasting impression on me.

In a workingman's bar, two groups began arguing about what music should be played on the jukebox. One man from each table stood and confronted each other as one confidently told the other something like "Don't mess with me or you'll regret it!" He then made menacing arm gestures, lept up and dramatically shouted "KARATE!" as he landed on the floor.

The other man shrugged, broke a chair over the guys head and, as he looked down at him crumpled on the floor, quietly said "chair!" Fight over.

Sometimes simple direct action is preferable to and more effective than the more elaborate and nicer-sounding alternatives.

Apparently Ford was not feeling well that day, and essentially said, Fuck it, and pulled the gun.

My sister worked for George Lucas at the time, and that's what she told me.

Ford was “not feeling well,” and talk emerged to nix the big fight in lieu of something a bit quicker, although it’s unclear whose idea it actually was.

“Nobody will say who said what,” Damon said at the roundtable, chiming in.

“Somehow, somebody said, ‘I’ve got this gun, why don’t I just use it?'” Marshall recalled.

Whoever the instigator, the idea got the ball rolling quickly. “After lunch, we did three shots, and we were two days ahead of schedule, and it’s the biggest moment in the movie,” said Marshall.

That sounds too vague about whose idea it was. Ford was the only person on set who'd've said "I've got this gun" instead of "Indy's got this gun."

Alas, she is no longer with us so I can't ask her.

No matter what, I'll stick with whatever the official version is.

explanation is here:

We were shooting in Tunisia, and the script had a scene in which I fight a swordsman, an expert swordsman, it was meant to be the ultimate duel between sword and whip. And I was suffering from dysentery, really, found it inconvenient to be out of my trailer for more than 10 minutes at a time. We'd done a brief rehearsal of the scene the night before we were meant to shoot it, and both Steve and I realized it would take 2 or 3 days to shoot this. And it was the last thing we were meant to shoot in Tunisia before we left to shoot in England. And the scene before this in the film included a whip fight against 5 bad guys that were trying to kidnap Marian, so I thought it was a bit redundant. I was puzzling how to get out of this 3 days of shooting, so when I got to set I proposed to Steven that we just shoot the son a bitch and Steve said "I was thinking that as well." So he drew his sword, the poor guy was a wonderful British stuntman who had practiced his sword skills for months in order to do this job, and was quite surprised by the idea that we would dispatch him in 5 minutes. But he flourished his sword, I pulled out my gun and shot him, and then we went back to England.

Btw, neither of those versions seems to be exactly what I read years ago, somewhere. My vague recollection was that it had said Ford had the flu, and I don't remember having read anything then about another whip-fight scene having seemed redundant. But these were two of the articles that turned up tonight, and I can't recall where I first heard about the scene not following the script.
