(115,879 posts)He was a competent U.S. Attorney but his ego, and eventually his drinking brought him to the sorry mess he is now. And he was always a racist, authoritarian asshole. After 9/11 he was widely disliked, partly because he wanted another term even though he was term-limited; then he tried to run for president and went nowhere with that. I don't think he could stand becoming irrelevant, which is why he finally ended up attached to TFG.

A pretty pathetic turn of events.
