House passes 'born alive' abortion bill

House Republicans are spotlighting the issue of abortion as they roll out their legislative agenda in the new Congress – a move that comes after the Supreme Court’s highly consequential decision last summer to overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling.

The GOP-led House voted on Wednesday to pass a bill that would require health care providers to try to preserve the life of an infant in the rare case that a baby is born alive during or after an attempted abortion. The bill is not expected to be taken up in the Democratic-controlled Senate, but passage in the House serves as a messaging opportunity for the new Republican majority. The vote was 220 to 210.

Under the bill, health providers who fail to comply with the requirements for care could face fines or up to five years in prison. The bill would not impose penalties on the mother and would grant the mother protection from any kind of prosecution.

Protesters hold signs as they rally in support of Planned Parenthood.

Opponents have argued that such measures restrict abortion access by threatening health care providers. It is already considered homicide in the US to intentionally kill an infant that is born alive.

That make infanticide murder and therefore illegal in all 50 states?

This is Catholic propaganda. They pretend to equate a spot of cells called blastocyst to a fully developed infant.

Lies, Catholics lie, pro lifers lie, GOPers lie, corporate media repeat the lies. Anything that must have religious support to succeed is a lie. Forced birthers and Catholic dogma depends on people believing a god wants a group of cells to develop into a live birth.

It depends on a god thinking human life is more important than any animal or even the planet. But then when the forced birth is accomplished, everyone just washes their hands of the baby. Or they try to force the mother to give up the baby to rich people to raise. Catholics have made lots of money off of adoptions.

Forced birthers are liars. Taking away a woman's free will to give birth is not a godly plan. It's a devil's plan.

As long as they're addressing things that aren't real.

The problem, though, is that as ludicrous as this legislation is and as ridiculous as the Republicans look in voting for it, it lays the groundwork for the further erosion of women's health care rights. Some doctor or hospital somewhere is going to be more worried about these garbanzos and their practicing medicine without a license than they are about their patient. Nobody wants to lose a license to practice because some ignorant judge somewhere decides that "born alive" is something that happens.
