General Discussion

Just wanted to speak up out of gratitude for this board and those running it.
I've seen a lot of different online forums since the 1980s, and this is a great one.
I don't find every post or every type of post interesting, on any given day, but I don't expect to, and it doesn't bother me that other people want to post them and respond to them. No one's forcing me to read them. And I've also found that my interests and the types of posts I like to read can change over time.
DU has survived as a message board community for two decades, despite all the competition from Facebook and Twitter.
That's remarkable. A lot of message boards didn't survive that competition.
It's also the result of DUers in general being pretty damn tolerant of - and supportive of - one another.
For which we should be grateful, IMHO.
This board is never going to be ONLY the posts that any one of us is looking for. That's impossible in a forum of any size.
It's never going to be only the information you want, in only the formats and sizes you want, at any particular moment.
It's a grand online buffet of news, opinion, personal experiences and requests of all types, humor and venting, and shared interests in almost any subject you can think of.
We can all take what we want from it. We don't have to agree on what's best.

(32,823 posts)The malicious intruders are quickly banned and most DUers never see their icky RW stuff.
I know because I did a stint last year on MIRT (Malicious Intruder Removal Team) and finally learned what goes on behind the scenes. Right-wing crazies are always trying to post their nasty crap here, but the diligent members of MIRT are amazing, quashing them and kicking them out. The MIRT membership rotates every 3 months or so, which allows a break for these hard-working volunteers and also gives others a chance to learn the procedures.
But members can help out in lots of other ways. Here's a suggestion to newer members: Agree to be on a jury
If you are on a jury you are given the opportunity to decide whether another person's post is worthy of DU (in other words, it fits our Forum Rules, or ToS) or not. Each DU jury is a randomly-selected group that decides whether someone's post should be hidden. Once you've been on jury duty for a few situations, you get a better feel for what is acceptable and what is unacceptable in our group.
Here's how to volunteer for Jury Duty:
Go to the "My Account" page and where they ask if you're "willingness to serve on juries" - you click on "Willing."
Screenshot (here's how mine looks):
If you are "Willing" then sooner or later you'll be invited to join a Jury. Every jury only takes maybe 5 minutes to read over the material and vote. It's a piece of cake but it's also very important for increasing our understanding in how all of this works.
The result is that DU will be BETTER for all of us.

(28,815 posts)i inadvertently refused jury service several months ago and did not know i could change my preference so easily.
though IIRC I do get annoyed at alerts that i think are gratuitous quite often. in most cases my rule of thumb is let the people speak.

(23,785 posts)I have noticed a sudden rash of posts expressing frustration with the manner of how and what other DU'ers post.
Fortunately, we're not all clones and there will be variations on what DU'ers post and how they post. As long as there is compliance with the Term of Service (link at bottom of page), there should be no issue.
If a DU'er feels strongly about an issue they can always post an inquiry in the "Ask the Administrator" forum.
I've come across several posts and posters over the years that I may not see eye to eye or appreciate their mode of posting. But rather than complain, I simply don't read those post and/or block the poster.
Life is too short to spend my time fretting over small issues.
On January 20th, DU will celebrate the 22nd anniversary of its launch.
Let's all celebrate this wonderful forum, the Administrators who have kept it going strong for 22 years and the multitude of individuals who have contributed their wit, wisdom, encouragement, support and sympathy.

interest in. I ignore things I absolutely have no interest in.
I look at things that interest me so far no matter who the poster is.
I'm still relatively newish at 2 1/2 yrs compared to the many of you who've been here a quarter, a third, half, two thirds, three quarters, and the whole time. There may be dynamics I don't know yet.
I learn a lot. I have fun. I comment. On occasion I start a thread. I feel good being here, grateful it's lasted so long for me to find it, Lu's being a haven for Dems. 👍

(19,204 posts)Is it really necessary to post what your cat is doing every hour of the day?
If you're so enamored with your cat start your own cat blog, and update it every few minutes with the newest position your cat has taken.
There are several cat lovers on DU who believe this is their own private cat blog. I've never seen them post about anything else, join in any conversation about obscure things like.......Democrats, world events, politics etc. I guess they find those subjects too mundane. They're certainly not as interesting as their cat rolling over onto it's back!
That's my gripe about the one thing that irritates me on DU, and I'm sticking to it. Have a wonderful day. 😊
femmedem
(8,208 posts)Or you can hide posts with a particular cat name. Or you can ignore anyone whose posts you don't want to see. That way you can have the experience here that you want, and people who like to read or post about cats can have the experience they want, without anyone feeling anxious or bad about what they are posting.
Go to your account, click trash can, and customize it however you want.

I've selected the "mobile" option, which doesn't seem to do what it's supposed to.

(8,208 posts)Or maybe there's a bug that the Admins don't know about. You could try the Ask the Administrators forum.
Sorry, I thought I had a solution for you.
SergeStorms
(19,204 posts)On my desktop computer I've selected those options and they work wonderfully.
I'm not in the house that much so I do most of my reading and posting on my phone. The same options don't work on my phone, for some reason. It's not that big of a deal. I just ignore the "guess what my cat just did" posts and read the important stuff.
I can also understand some people's need for constant contact with their animals. The part I question is others who actually think what someone else's cat is doing, is interesting?
Hey, it takes all types of people to make the world go around, I guess.

(11,773 posts)I also go to LBN a lot when I first read DU, no cat posts. I have no idea why you are seeing so many cat posts. Are you looking at The Lounge first?
SergeStorms
(19,204 posts)on the "Greatest Threads" section on the home page. Like I said to another poster, I do the majority of my DUing on my phone, and the options for hiding threads, posters etc. don't work on my phone for some reason. On my desk top computer everything is fine. I'm just exposed to them on my phone.
I just don't see the thrill people get from replying to one particular poster's constant threads about the "funny" things their cats are doing throughout the day. All day. Every day.
It's Democratic Underground, not Kitty Cat Underground. Last time I knew not a single cat voted for Joe Biden.
Start a cat blog. Talk about your cats 24/7/365. Every time they roll over onto their other side you can post about it, and the same 25 people can "oooh and ahhhh" about their great achievement. 🙄 I don't see the need for wasting the bandwidth on Democratic Underground for incessant cat posts, that's all.
