Thousands without power following explosion near Lucas Oil Stadium

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - About 9,500 IPL Power customers were without power following a reported explosion at a power substation at West and Morris streets late Monday morning.

Firefighters were called to the substation, about a mile from Lucas Oil Stadium, after receiving reports of a loud boom and smoke rising from the area.

IPL reports a faulted breaker caused the fire. Crews de-energized the substation so firefighters could battle the blaze. IPL reports power was restored around Noon.

Traffic signals were out at several downtown intersections as a result of the blaze.

Numerous callers to the 24-Hour News 8 newsroom indicated their power flickered before hearing a large boom.
