the dad of the little girl and boy I have been babysitting for 4 years talked politics for the first time when he picked up his son today. I really really like him a lot, but he started in on the gay marriage and pot legalization and wonder what this country was coming to. I didn't know his politics before that, and I sincerely wish he had kept it to himself. I just kind of let him speak and did not really respond. I hate it when things like this color my views of someone. Naive maybe, but that's the way I like it in conservative Eastern Washington.

2. Just start from the assumption that their politics are informed by ignorance

It is E. WA. Then you can be surprised if they're liberal, and nonplussed if they're not.

Also, always remember to personalize the issue with conservatives. "Do you know any gay people?" "Do you know anyone who's ever been arrested for possession?".

Pugetopolis is going to drag E. WA into the 21st century whether they like it or not.
