Should be fully bipartisan support, what would anyone have to hide ?

(543 posts)Having worked in a military classified data environment, I understand that there was a very serious chain of custody and significant logs created for classified document handling. I understand that certain elements in the hierarchy of command can declassify documents for certain purposes, the mixing with other records and mishandling of such documents still proves grave or at least proves a very big tear in sensitive material management. IF these things ARE highly sensitive and those who have possession SHOULDN'T have them then not only should they be held liable but also all the eyes (from Comm centers to cabinet members, etc) that are responsible with tracking and disseminating them should be as well. That being said, this is starting to smell like the new scandal just to keep us occupied with pointing fingers at both sides rather than looking at the big picture and holding ALL accountable all the way down the ranks. For all we know these are all planted or are a nothing burger (in the grand scheme of national security) just blown up to distract us from more nefarious dealings.
Regardless it still paints an ugly picture of incompetence and if continued could seriously damage our national security.
I'm sick to my stomach about it.

(7,290 posts)worked in a classified environment, but its certainly not that way now for classified documents. For hardware, yes, but there is no chain of custody or documentation for classified docs.
I could go in tomorrow, print 20 copies of 20 classified emails, put a cover sheet in them, lock them in my cabinet, and then give a copy to anyone with the necessary clearance and need to know.
Or I could just forward the email and the could print it out .

(261 posts)Maybe there is. I'm no expert on the issue, but it does some there is, at least, some info being withheld for seemingly no good reason.
Case in point...2-3 weeks ago, Biden ordered more Kennedy assassination files relased. Still, 515 documents were withheld in full and another 2,545 were redacted partially! After 60s years, it seems far-fetched that anything should be withheld from Americans at this point.
I think it was during the Mueller investigation, it came out that McCabe (I think it was him) had his office at FBI HQs renovated. There was a document released where the cost of a new table for his office was mentioned. The dollar amount was redacted in an otherwise lightly redacted document. It turns out, the conference table cost $70,000. That should not have been withheld. It would be nice to know who redacted it and at whose direction.
When we get past this current hubbub and everyone else who decides to come forward to fallout sword, Congress needs to reform the whole classification system. Stringing up some ( eg, Chelsea Manning, David Patreus, Reality Winner, etc) for relatively small and less significant violation while downplaying mishandling of similar but larger volumes of docs by more prominent individuals shouldn't be tolerated. Mishandling classified docs is either a serious national security risk or it isn't. Whatever it is, it shouldn't vary depending on who the accused is and who the prosecutor is.
