Right wing leaders are big mad that Xbox is going woke, slamming an optional feature meant to reduce the consoles overall carbon footprint as an effort to recruit kids into climate politics.
On Tuesdays episode of Fox and Friends, Fox News anchor Ainsley Earhardt and radio host Jimmy Failla fumbled through a short segment about Xboxs latest effort to allow players to curb power consumption. It was as level-headed and chill as you might expect Fox to be when the topic of climate change comes up.
New Xbox consoles will incentivize players to opt in to the more environmentally friendly Shutdown mode by offering more of the same features that Sleep mode currently allows, including automatic background updates for games at strategic times throughout the day that would result in lower carbon emissions. Shutdown mode consumes less energy than Sleep mode, and for select players in Xboxs Insider program, the Shutdown option will immediately become the new default. Neither of these modes is new, but only some players have had access to these features until now. It will become available to all Xbox users in the coming weeks.
But that didnt stop Fox News from presenting this as some conspiratorial effort to make kids woke.
Its crazy what theyre doing, but we understand what this is, Failla said. Its not that its actually going to offset emissions. The level of reduction is infinitesimal. But theyre trying to recruit your kids into climate politics at an earlier age. Make them climate conscious now.
Youre right, theyre going after the children, Earhardt agreed.

(29,205 posts)made in the last 20 years has a "idle power" mode which is typically configured by default (yes you can disable it, but you sort of have to know what you are doing).
This mode reduces the power to the unit while there is little activity (for example, while I am typing this message, the number of instructions needed to transmit the packets, get replies, and paint the dialog box with what I am typing is actually quite small).
Reducing the power does 3 things, a) it reduces the cost of electricity needed to power the device, b) if the device is mobile, it preserves more battery power, and c) by reducing the power, it also reduces the heat produced... which can cause other expenses to move the heat from the processor to the room and then from the room to the outdoors, etc.
Since the max instruction cycle rate is not needed very often, this savings in cost (and longevity of the CPU) is passed on to the consumer. It also helps the environment.
how "woke"!!! They better all give up their laptops and cell phones... no need to post things to twitter as those computers are just too "woke"... we need diesel powered laptops...with exhaust pipes!

(3,339 posts)I kinda tune 'em out, given to realize they're just looking to score points rather than engaging in good-faith discussions.
One plank is not a bridge but rather just one plank of that bridge. Pretending the plank is the equivalent of the bridge itself illustrates (to me) a deeply-rooted, orthodox thinking-pattern closed to everything except that which fits their own generalizations.
With for-profit rage as a business model, and pandering to their "tell me what my opinion about this is supposed to be" demographic, I can see why they so profitably continue to sell fear, uncertainty, and doubt: it's popular with the fearful and skeptic alike.
