Worst impacts of sea level rise will hit earlier than expected, says modeling study

https://phys.org/news/2023-01-worst-impacts-sea-earlier.amp

Current models of sea level rise suggest the most widespread impacts will occur after sea level has risen by several meters. But a new study finds the biggest increases in inundation will occur after the first 2 meters (6.6 feet) of sea level rise, covering more than twice as much land as older elevation models predicted.

And when the Thwaites Glacier gives way in the next 10 years, we'll see several feet of sea level rise.

I'm "OK" as far as where I live in The Bronx but my sis lives pretty close to the water.

I checked the modeling for her area a few yrs ago, and it looked like it come up leaving a 20-15 ft dry area before her building.

Obviously certain areas where I would have gone would be affected though. And what they'd do with subways maybe having to stop certain trains crossing in the under water tunbels unless the could be reenforced?

"sea level rise projections in NYC".

A pretty cool (if sobering) 5 Burroughs map showed up.
You could zoom into an area, and you'd see the projection. It may also have shown a lesser, and worser case.

I couldn't find the original map but I found something as good, I think.

Google:

Sea Level Rise Map

(It's from NOAA)

When the page opens look at the bottom for the turquoisy rectangle button saying "LAUNCH".

Don't be "anxious" upon seeing the whole Continental USA showing up. 😮😄 (I think you scroll also to Alaska & Hawaii.)

You can Zoom Right Down To about
a 3 Ave wide by 8 blocks long area with a bit more (I checked).
You might see more using a tablet, or a computer; I'm using my cell phone.
It shows projections from an extra 1 foot up to 10 feet.

Good Luck!
And if you, or anyone one you know wants to get into the weeds bc it's a site for serious medium and long term community etc planning (a friend got one degree in Urban Planning but followed a different passion - they'd love this).
It's up to the wazoo with all manner of data, data maps, source materials etc. As it should be.

Pretty sure you'll quickly find what you need. 👍

Behind all along, the climate change is not linear,it is exponential so it will end up being at least twice as fast as they have been predicting. IMHO

4. Sea level rise and hot temps are not the worst problem, crop failures are.

And you can't just start growing crops in the artic regions to compensate, because the per acre yields will be very low due to poor soil quality compared to say the great plains or Ukraine.

This is not *just* a move away from the coast and live in air conditioning problem.

12. Any idea what happens in Florida with so many living on the coast?

Wondering what eighteen feet above sea level looks like. Hard to imagine communities once the coastline is inundated. Perhaps hurricane Ian was a taste of slower surges that will change the landscape.
